Engineering Technician
During the year between finishing my Undergraduate degree and starting my Postgraduate I spent 6 months working in northern Queensland in Australia. The company was a copper mining company and I worked within the Exploration department as an Engineering Technician. This role included setting out and surveying existing drill holes all over the main mine site using GPS. Whilst not busy with this then I would help out with collecting and movement of samples, marking up of samples for geologists to log into records and cutting of core samples. It was on a 12 days on and 9 days off roster, flying in and out of Brisbane where I was based at the time.
Undergraduate Engineer
I spent the sandwich placement part of my degree working for VolkerFitzpatrick on three different sites over 13 months. I started off working as an undergraduate engineer shadowing a senior engineer on the Birmingham Airport Taxiway Rehabilitation project. Then I moved to Dartford to work on a remedials scheme. This included the excavating and re-laying of the northern concrete yard. On this project I took on more of a setting out role and project managed a part of the main contract when implementing a vehicle wash bay to be introduced within the kerb boundary. I also looked after various parts of the Quality Management for the project. The final 6 months of my placement were spent on the Athletes Village site in the Olympic Park in Stratford, where I worked with a specialist sub-contractor. This again required me to project manage a part of the main contract and be in charge of setting out and as-built information using a total station, as well as keeping all the Quality Management and Health and Safety paperwork up to date for the client.
Trainee Engineer
During my time with the company I was employed as a Trainee Engineer in the Maritime Department. I assisted with the writing, compiling and calculation of formulas for spreadsheets and reports, which also included calculations for Quantity Surveying and Structural Engineering. On a rota basis I chaired meetings that discussed factors affecting junior members of our department, which were then presented to senior members of the department. I was given the opportunity to travel overseas, which I thoroughly enjoyed and at times being the senior member of the travelling team. The company was involved with a number of ‘career information days’ in local schools with which I regularly helped out in, promoting the career of an engineer to local students through presentations and practical exercises.
