He graduated from Sterling Heights High School where he was a member of the "Sterling Silver" Show Choir under the direction of Mrs. Jane Christy. It was Mrs. Christy's influence that inspired Mr. Hulbert to pursue music in college.After high school, Mr. Hulbert attended Macomb Community College and was a member of both the chamber choir and the "Macombers" Show Choir. Mr. Hulbert received his BA from Eastern Michigan University in Music Education and his MAT from Marygrove College.During his tenure in Utica Community Schools, Mr. Hulbert has taught all grades ranging from K-12. In 2005-2016, Mr. Hulbert along with teaching partner, Heather Andrus, began the Wiley Explosion Show Choir program at Wiley Elementary. "Wiley Explosion" was a show choir group made up of very talented auditioned singer/dancers ranging from grades four through six. Mr. Hulbert was also a 2020 Utica Community Schools teacher of the year nominee. Apart from teaching music, Mr. Hulbert enjoys doing many other activities such as farming, officiating weddings, practicing yoga, remodeling his house, gardening, calligraphy, stained glass, blacksmithing, cake decorating, pottery, beekeeping, knitting, weaving, quilting and building his garden-gage railroad and his 7.5” gage/2.5”scale railroad on his 20 acre hobby farm in Metamora, MI.As a lover of trains and the railroad, Stephen has worked the last five summers learning about boiler fabrication for small scale steam locomotives from Martin Knox at Ridge Boiler Works. Stephen is currently building a 2.5” scale 4-4-0 steam locomotive that he can run on his 7.5” gage railroad on his hobby farm. Stephen is a lover of life, people, animals and loves to learn.

A barn is filled with people – some are singing in a choir, some playing instruments, some dancing. People of all ages interact. The scene is one of organized chaos as students (youths and adults) receive formal and informal vocal, theater and dance lessons. Sunlight streams through the wall of windows at the back of the hall, painting the dance floor with blocks of light. The space echoes with the sound of music, acting and learning. In the art studio, learners are working side by side. Some are painting, some throwing clay on the potter’s wheel, some using hand torches to shape glass into beads. Looking up, they see the work of previous learners – the walls are covered with murals, impromptu paintings, and colorful handprints. Downstairs, the saws of a wood shop are buzzing. Students are creating the set for an upcoming production of a musical to be performed in the dance hall. Parents and grandparents are helping the youth who are building the set, teaching them how to use the machinery and operate it safely.Hives are set up on a section of the property for those interested in learning the art of beekeeping. Students dressed in bee suits peer intently from behind their veils. Instructors teach about proper hive management and the importance of bees and pollination in crop production. Beautiful flowerbeds are bursting with annuals, perennials, and native plants. Students are tending the plants and learning about what the plants need to grow and thrive. They are learning formally and informally: a teacher instructs while students share personal experiences and talk about their relationship to plants. Master Gardeners mingle with students and pass on their knowledge and expertise. The Master Gardeners are encouraged to adopt Hulbee Gardens as their volunteers project, working with students on a regular basis.
