As a Patrol Sergeant, I direct activities associated with a patrol rotation within the Police Department, in addition to performing law enforcement work. My supervisory responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of a rotation; conducting employee counseling and performance evaluation; making assignments; and, providing technical direction on matters related to patrol, problem oriented policing, investigations and directed patrol. My assignments also include participating in some personnel related functions to include interviewing and field training for new employees. My position also requires the application of modern law enforcement techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of the town's objectives. As a sergeant my position involves frequent public interaction which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. My position is sometimes subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working both inside and outside subject to environments, of extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, hazardous material spills with fumes, oils, gasses or flammable liquids. In addition, I am subject to Level III OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. My work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and state and federal law, supplemented with specific direction from superior officers.
