About Stephen Kellett

Goal: Grow Software Verify to where it should be rather than where it is now. To be a better entrepreneur than I am now.I've done everything from writing 8 bit computer games in the 1980s to reverse engineering a major telco's cellular traffic planning algorithms so that they could patent them (implementing engineer left no documents!) to simulating flight paths for defence training and the creation of a multimedia authoring suite and the creation of software tools to help software engineers write better software. The past 22 years I've been involved in software development, adwords, marketing, just about everything you need to do to run a company writing and selling software on the Internet.Specialties: Reverse engineering, assembly language (rare breed now!), OS internals, data parsing, code instrumentation, memory error analysis and correction. Software tool development.

Stephen Kellett Work Experience Details
  • Software Verify Limited
Founder - Creating Software Tools To Improve Windows Software Developer Productivity
Software Verify Limited Feb 2002 - Present
    Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
We develop software tools for software engineers using C++ and other native languages (Delphi, Visual Basic 6, Visual Basic.Net, Fortran) and .Net. The tools focus on various different quality related issues: Memory leak and handle leak detection, code coverage, performance profiling, thread deadlock detection and analysis and flow tracing. We have a core group of commercial tools and a variety of free tools that also provide valuable and useful insight into related software quality issues.
  • Object Media Limited
Founder - Bespoke Software Development, Consulting, Fixing Problems Other People Can'T, Software Too
Object Media Limited Oct 1994 - Jan 2016
    Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
Software Development Company. Development of software for mobile telephone traffic mapping (GSM and before that, analogue), military aircraft flight mapping simulation, and software tool development.
  • Solidworks
    Software Engineer
    Solidworks Sep 1998 - Jun 2001
Responsible for finding, analyzing and fixing memory leaks, handle leaks, data corruption in SolidWorks core product. This worked improved the performance of SolidWorks greatly. Also ported the product to 64 bits although the x64 release of the software did not debut publically until 2006.This work also resulted in the creation of early versions of the C++ Memory Validator software tool now available from Software Verification Limited.
  • Object Media Ltd
Web Browser And Multi-Media Authoring Suite
Object Media Ltd Sep 1996 - Sep 1998
Development of a multi-media authoring suite. This also turned into a web browser, XML editor and multi-media authoring suite all in one. This was the first XML authoring tool (Several years before XMLspy was launched). Unfortunately I ran out of money before I could launch it. Strike one for my first entreprenuerial venture. Down, but not out...This led to me working for Solidworks as a previous work colleague (Kevan Heydon) called me to ask if I could come and debug some memory problems for Solidworks. I got so involved in that work that the authoring tool never got launched. But I learned so much writing that tool that the work at Solidworks combined with the work on the authoring tool resulted in the creation of Software Verification Limited.
  • Bt Labs
    Software Contractor
    Bt Labs Jun 1996 - Sep 1996
Hired to do a job that by the time I arrived had evaporated. Hiring at BT is so slow it was easier to keep me than terminate the contract and then rehire X weeks later. Very odd situation. As a result they put me a on "skunkworks" project so they could evaluate the then new language Java from Sun Microsystems. I wrote a GUI and parser for a flat file database system they had. I also wrote a program to auto-document the software I had written.Resigned the contract to persue my ambitions to create a multi-media authoring tool.
  • Dera - Defence Evaluation And Research Agency
    Software Contractor
Dera - Defence Evaluation And Research Agency Mar 1996 - Jun 1996
Work to automate and simulate flight paths of fighter planes to allow ground staff to be trained without requiring lots of real aircraft in the sky. A few are real, the rest are genuine flight paths of craft on previous days. Saves the taxpayer millions. I cannot say anymore as the rest is covered by the Official Secrets Act. The above is a paraphrasing of what I was told at interview (prior to signing the act).During this time the IRA started blowing things up again, so I declined renewing my contract, plus the work I had been hired to do was complete so I was not leaving anyone holding incomplete work.
  • Bt Labs
Software Contractor - Bt Labs, Martlesham, Gsm Telephony Planning
    Bt Labs Sep 1994 - Mar 1996
Fixing and improving the analogue and GSM radio data GIS used for mobile telephony traffic planning. Also allowed BT to apply for a patent by reverse engineering some software a previous contractor had left undocumented.
  • Laser Scan Limited
    Senior Software Engineer
Laser Scan Limited Jul 1990 - Sep 1994
Responsible for data structure library and flexible, configuration user interface components and library for Laser Scan's G.I.S. The UI could be configured from simple text UIL files and automatically add callbacks and handlers into the company's Lull programming language. Implemented using X11/Motif on 7 Unix platforms and VMS using single source code. Part of the "Gothic" project, 1 million line C code base.
  • Potterton Energy Controls / Schlumberger
    Software Engineer
Potterton Energy Controls / Schlumberger Apr 1988 - Jun 1990
Embedded systems software engineer on 8bit 630X and 680x systems.Controlling heating and ventilation equipment for optimum power consumption and fuel saving. Also worked on GUI system written in Modula 2 on a 80286 PC AT (which at the time, seemed really fast!)Industry is: Building and Energy Management Systems (BEMS).
  • Gannon Designs Limited
    Software Engineer
Gannon Designs Limited Aug 1987 - Feb 1988
Wrote 5 versions of the arcade game Dingo for the C64, BBC B, Acorn Electron, Atari 400 and Commodore 16 - the clones were called "Fruit Fight". Wrote music engine for the company. The company web bust in February (we didn't get any pay for 1988). The games were never released because the liquidator would not allow it.I later wrote Motorola 68000 and Intel 80286 versions of Fruit Fight on the Atari ST and IBM PC-AT (the latter in my lunch hour at work) to prove I could write 32 bit and 16 bit assembly language. Back then practically no one could afford a 386 - only the manager had one (status symbol) and he had no use for it.
