Stephen Levit is the embodiment and personification of leadership in occupational medicine. He is a problem solver, creating clinically accurate, financially sound and cost-effective solutions to problematic and complicated claims of injury sustained, at work or in the world. He is recognized for creating a win-win-win situation for all the stakeholders in workers compensation disability claims. Dr. Levit’s approach is that the best possible evidence-based medical care IS the most cost-effective treatment. His more than 25 years as a medical consultant for insurance companies began after years of clinical practice and culminated in employment at in 2001 a tLiberty Mutual insurance as the regional medical director for the Western and Southern Regions. He became recognized by his peers as a clinical expert for identification of the causation of injury, the accuracy of diagnosis and for the appropriateness of therapeutic intervention recommendations, including surgery. Dr. Levit’s work at Liberty set the standards for excellence in the management of claims.. He remains focused and committed to driving success Dr. Levit brings a background in the successful practice of patient-focused clinical medicine. His career began as an emergency medicine physician, training initially at San Francisco General Hospital Mission Emergency Room and St. Luke’s Hospital, Experiences interacting with insurance carriers led to a position a medical consultant, and culminated in full-time employment at Liberty Mutual. Dr. Levit is expert at overcoming adversity. A history major at Rutgers he was told how difficult it would be for him to enter medical school: He graduated from UCSF. Dr. Levit speaks and understands Spanish, and learned how the abiity to interview patients directly rather than through translators enlightened him with a perspective that emphasized obtaining the most accurate history of illness or injury. When Dr. Levit first approached workers compensation carriers about how the use of a medical director would be advantageous, financially and clinically, there was little recognition of that fact. But the use of a medical director became much more common throughout the industry based on his successes at Liberty Mutual Dr. Levit’s most valued strength is his character—compassion, integrity and humility balanced by curiosity leading to knowledge based on experience. Most recently he has focused on clinical education of musculo-skeletal injuries and has cooperated in the production of educational videos for nurses and physicians on this topic.
