I am currently based in the Scottish Power Mailroom in Glasgow HQ, as a Temporary Mailroom Assistant and Team Leader. My role involves delivering all incoming mail to the relevant floor, franking all outgoing mail and managing all outgoing special deliveries. I also manage outbound courier requests. As Team Leader I am also responsible for managing the small team of colleagues directly under me, dealing with customer complaints and issues, and compiling the monthly invoices and expenditures for our client.

I was a Store Associate and then later a supervisor for an outdoor clothing retailer. My duties were to manage staff and assist with the rota, as well as budgeting and cashing up. I also managed stock control and merchandising. This role had a heavy focus on customer satisfaction and delivering result in a fast-paced environment.

Reporting to Dr Andrew MacKillop I was employed as a research assistant on the “Spaces of Power” project with the University of Aberdeen. My role in this project involved transcribing the minutes of Aberdeen Burgh council from the year 1650 into a translated document, which is then uploaded onto Dropbox for the attention of my superiors. My palaeography skills have greatly increased through this role, and I have over 3 years’ experience of transcription through various Research assistant posts and projects for degrees and articles.

As an International Support worker I was responsible for assisting International Students with Immigration information and general support whilst in Dundee. In particular my role was to assist with visa extension and renewal applications. My job was also to assist my manager in appointments with students, checking their documents and criteria in order to ensure they met the requirements for a visa extension. My role involved recording and holding personal information on the student database until it could be deleted, checking documents, recording information about enquiries and methods of enquiry, researching the student database to assess service use and researching student documents to ensure we were up to date for any audit. Tracking enquiries at every stage so that we could keep the student informed of any progress and processing correspondence from the UK Visas and Immigration authority as well as ensuring all student records and client files were filed correctly was also a major part of my role.

During the summer of my graduation from my Undergraduate Degree, before I began my Masters Degree, I worked as a research assistant for Professor James Livesey. My research for Professor Livesey involved researching the pamphlets being published by both nationalist and unionist Irishmen and women during the debate surrounding whether or not Ireland should enter union with Great Britain. The debate took place from 1798-1801, and continued long after the motion was passed. My role was to index these pamphlets for Professor Livesey, providing a brief outline of the contents of the pamphlet as well as cataloguing whether it was pro or anti-union. This role allowed me to greatly increase my experience of research and also linked in with research I am pursuing as part of my masters. The role has provided me also with the tools to analyse data and to draw conclusions from a text early on by the language used.

My main responsibilities as part of this project was to write a weekly news digest covering the main stories of the Scottish Referendum debate, and email these out to our 2,000 subscribers. I was also involved in assisting with live events, talks and debates, and also had a chair on the steering group, which helped decide on the future paths and aspirations for the project, until it's completion in September 2014.

This was a temporary summer placement, during which I worked for the Vice – Principal of Dundee University, Professor Christopher Whatley. As part of this placement, I travelled to Edinburgh and Aberdeen to research primary source materials from the National Archives of Scotland and the Aberdeen University Archives respectively. During this placement, I researched the Hanoverian party and Scotland, how well they were supported, and how they defeated the Jacobites. This job taught me to look beyond pre-supposed opinions, and gave me valuable experience of academic research.
