Principal
WKUWCSA is a secondary school of 600 year 7 to 13 students, 60% of whom are boarders. It was established to provide a high quality education for students from diverse backgrounds in opposition to the apartheid education of South Africa. It maintains a policy of deliberate diversity attracting teachers and staff from some 60 countries (30% Eswatini, 50% the rest of Africa and 20% the rest of the world.) It offers the IGCSE (Cambridge) and IBDP and has consistently achieved above the world average in both. As an academically selective school it is only able to offer one in five applicants a place. In the years I have led the school, we have undertaken both a Cambridge and IB academic review and quality assurance with the Independent Quality Assurance Agency (www.iqaa.co.za). The school has spent two years investigating and implementing this year a 21 day outdoor education journey around Eswatini for our year 9s.I have initiated our “carbon neutral” strategy with various components (solar, wind turbine, bio-digestor and solar geysers) including integrating this initiative into the curriculum. In 2016 we developed our “Strategy 2020” which has led our thinking since then. I have led a significant fund-raising drive to retain our 30% scholarship level and for the upgrading and renewing of a number of the facilities (new dining hall, new dam, classroom block, sports center and residential refurbishment). A significant part of my responsibility is retaining our academic rigor through prudent staff recruitment and retention. One of our strategic imperatives has been the development of our policy framework in compliance with international educational best practice.
Rector
St Stithians is a Methodist Church School of 2,600 students (year 0 to 12) in five schools on a single 120 ha property, in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the largest independent school in Southern Africa and is widely regarded as one of the best. It includes the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy providing support in key subjects to students from disadvantaged communities, and the Kamoka Bush School (situated on a 500ha farm about 300kms north of Johannesburg), providing a three week outdoor education programme for year 9s.The Rector is the chief executive officer ultimately responsible for a staff complement of some 350 teachers and management teams in all seven components of the College with an annual budget of some ZAR 195 million and assets of some ZAR 1 billion in 2013.Apart from the day to day responsibility for the overall academic, strategic, financial, personnel and public standing of the College I was involved in some key developments during my tenure. The most significant was the launching of the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy and the Kamoka Bush School. We also successfully established an environmental programme, with the aim of reducing the College’s Carbon footprint and integrating “green” issues into the curriculum. We launched an Endowment Fund as part of the long-term sustainability of the College. The development and implementation of a transformation strategy aimed at diversifying the staff and student make-up was a key initiative.
Teacher / Principal
SHC is a Catholic day school of 1200 students, year 000 to 12, offering the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matriculation certificate. It was one of the first schools in the country to defy apartheid laws and admit black students in the 1970s and consequently integrally involved in the return of exiles and placement of their children in South African schools and in the transition years of the country during the 1990s.In my leadership positions at the school I led the various curriculum and assessment changes that happened during the transition from apartheid to democracy in the country. This included the development of new student leadership models and significant teacher development. At a strategic and financial level significant attention was required to navigate through the legislative and curricula upheavals of the national transition.
