I recently heard a beautiful phrase "Don't fall in love with your solution, fall in love with the problem"I'm happy to work at an organization in which we seek to deeply understand our client's problems before jumping to solutions. Then we can go to work to find the best answer. Sometimes this means we know the answer or can quickly find it. Then we can bring the right people technology and processes together to solve the problem. Other times we realize the answer isn't obvious. It requires humility to say "we don't know and we need to figure this out". The beautiful thing here is that this situation often starts an adventure in learning and innovation. I continually see the people in our services finding a new or better way to tackle the unknown. It doesn't stop there because then we share the knowledge about how to solve these problems across our organization helping more and more clients get better value and helping each of our people advance their knowledge.Many people know me for my lean background and this is completely consistent - we seek to understand the purpose of what we're doing, develop process and technology that works, make the performance visible and, as a learning organization, develop our people. My lean adventure started by learning from several members of the Toyota Autonomous Study Group including Mr. Nagamatsu, Mr. Kurosaka, Mr. Hara and Mr. Nakao (who was mentored and trained by Mr. Ohno). Today it continues as I learn from people throughout Haley & Aldrich, our clients and from many others.
