Trained in Chinese Studies at Yale and University of California, Davis, MacKinnon is a emeritus professor of History and former Director of Center for Asian Studies at Arizona State University. Besides dozens of academic articles and book chapters, he is the author of Power and Politics in Late Imperial China (1981); China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s and 1940s(1987); Agnes Smedley: Life and Times of an American Radical (1988); Wuhan, 1938: War, Refugees, and Making of Modern China (2008) – all published by U. of Calif. Press . China Reporting and Agnes Smedley were positively reviewed in New York Times, TLS, Guardian and widely translated. Most recently, Wuhan, 1938, is selling well in Chinese translation. After 8 months in 1977-78 on a research Fulbright in India for the Smedley biography, MacKinnon moved with his family to China. Between 1979 and 1981 and again in 1985, he worked as an expert for the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, teaching and editing translations from Chinese to English. More recently, for 2005-06, he was awarded research grants from Fulbright-Hays, ACLS-CSCC, and Nanjing Hopkins Center for research in China. Winter of 2013-14 he was in India lecturing on China with a Nehru-Fulbright senior research/lecturer fellowship out of Univ. of PuneWith Diana Lary, Hans Van de Ven, and Ezra Vogel he has been working to bring together Chinese, Japanese, and Western scholars of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45 - for rational analysis of the history of the war. The initial edited 2002 conference volume China At War was published by Stanford U. Press in 2007. The second volume on military history, Battle for China (2010), with third volume on international relations Negotiating China’s Destiny (Stanford 2014). MacKinnon's current big writing project is completing a book ms. entitled The Last Romantic: Life and Times of Chen Hansheng 陈翰笙 (1897-2004) -- Chinese scholar and global political activist.
