Mechanical Design Engineer[Opti] Kinetics Nov 1996 - Jul 2012Mechanical design of optical effects equipment and their enclosures, including mechanical assemblies and mechanisms.Top-down design methodology utilised, to create new products from initial design concept through to final design layout. Products are designed from concept on 2D CAD system in the form of overall design layout. The designs are modified through an iterative process to eventually come to a design solution that meets all the initial design requirements. This design is then broken down into individual detail drawings that are issued to production for prototype build.Alongside the physical design, complete product costings are maintained throughout the design process from the initial concept to the pre-production stage. All design work usually entails close liaison with electronics engineers on-site and sub-contract suppliers off-site.Design function also includes working with suppliers to discuss suitable manufacturing processes best suited to solving design problems while at the same time not exceeding project budget.Following product release to production, full exploded assembly drawings are created for the benefit of production department, service department and customer/distributor enquiries.Design work includes investigation and interpretation of relevant safety standards. Close relationship with sub-contract test-house to ensure that products conform to appropriate American UL or European standards. All products must comply with UL 122 (in accordance with NFPA 70) and CE marking (European Directives) requirements.Designs may incorporate asynchronous AC or stepper motors.Engineering design using AutoCAD Release 2000i and Mechanical Desktop (v5) to create 3D solid models for the process of design comprehension, evaluation and rapid prototype manufacture.Including Sheet Metal fabrication, Aluminium Extrusion design, Injection Moulded component design, and Vacuum Formed plastic components. -
