About Stephen Marx
Dr. Marx graduated from Yale College Summa Cum Laude, received his MD in Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1968, and then trained for three years in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has spent 48 years conducting research at the NIH as a tenured faculty member. He is a senior member of the Inter-Institute Endocrine Training Program at NIH. For 20 years, he was Chief of the Genetics and Endocrinology Section of NIDDK. He has published over 400 articles and served on the editorial boards of many journals. He lectures at national and international meetings. His main interests have been clinical and basic studies of the parathyroids and hereditary disorders associated with hyperparathyroidism. He led the recognition of familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia. He participated in collaborations that led to identification of most of the genes that cause variants of primary hyperparathyroidism; CASR, MEN1, HRPT2, and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) (i.e. p27, p15, p18, p21), and GCM2. In 2015 he was honored by NIDDK appointment as the first Gerald D. Aurbach Distinguished Scientist. Presently he is in the Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) and the Section of Endocrinology and Genetics (SEGEN) of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human development (NICHD). He continues to conduct research on the endocrine and genetic aspects of parathyroid and other hormonal disorders.

Chief, Genetics & Endocrinology Section Niddk
Research on human disorders of hormone excess (usually tumors and cancers and most with overproduction of hormones affecting calcium metabolism). Methods include clinical management and basic laboratory research. We benefitted from a 15 year close collaboration with Francis Collins, Director of the Human Genome Project. We played central roles in identification of several genes that cause certain types (syndromes) of these hormonal diseases: MEN1, CASR, HRPT2, and CDKIs. We also study how these identified genes function in normal cells and tumor cells. Co-authored over 350 scientific articles during 40 years.
Chief, Mineral Metabolism Section In Niddk
Direct laboratory and clinical research projects about disorders of calcium. Major interest in genetics of hyperparathyroidism and related endocrine disorders. Virtually complete characterization of all features of familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia and its homozygous form, i.e. neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism. The above projects were extended with development of the group as Genetics and Endocrinology Section after 2000. Also other major projects 1980-1990 on disorders with severe resistance to vitamin D.
Senior Investigator In Niamd And Niddk
Conduct laboratory and clinical research on human disorders of mineral metabolism. Developed new methods to analyze calcitonin receptors, vitamin D receptors, and parathyroid hormone. The name of NIAMD evolved to NIADDK and then NIDDK.
