Profile bio

About Stephen Mcauliffe

I am an experienced UK and transnational higher education strategic leader. I work across a wide range of professional service, contributing to leadership of strategy and policy, digital transformation and estate projects for education/student experience. I pride myself on leading change successfully amongst sizeable populations in complex universities. I do this through approachable personal leadership, clear accountability, and transparency in process and decision. I ensure that individuals know they are valued and teams know the environment is challenging but supportive. That they are clear on the aims, what they are responsible for, hold a warrant and the tools to innovate. At Royal Holloway, University of London I serve as a member of the Executive Board with a portfolio that covers Estates, IT, HR, Commercial Services, Marketing & Communications, Research Services, Library Services, and Health & Safety. My work is built on significant experience working on education and student experience in research intensive universities: Nottingham, Birmingham and Essex where I led multiple projects delivering across professional services for student benefit. I have a track record of achieving excellent change results – at Nottingham I was the senior professional role leading the response to Covid 19 across education in partnership with the PVC. I led a successful project upgrading a vital IT system and reversing failures of earlier projects (Oracle campus solutions). I contributed directly at the University of Birmingham to the TEF gold success and secured excellent outcomes to our regulatory (UKVI) audits. As a Senior Officer of the University I contributed across corporate and commercial areas, leading over 2,100 staff in my own department and across the five colleges. At Essex my professional leadership of education and my role on the board of Essex Commercial Services Ltd supported rapid league table rise plus THES top 15 for student experience; as Director of Careers at Nottingham in 2012 my strategy moved us to 1st place in the UK for employer targeting - (HighFliers), gaining a ranking score of 99/100 (12th worldwide) in the QS for employer perception. I have led services across borders (Singapore, Malaysia, China and Dubai), this included spending five months living and working in Kuala Lumpur, reviewing professional services there for Nottingham as well as a strong role in the development of a new campus in Dubai for Birmingham. I am privileged to serve as a governor of South & City College, Birmingham.
