About Stephen Mcinturff, Phd

Scientist interested in hearing sciences and electrophysiology.Bio...I first started college as an Audio Engineering major at Belmont University (Nashville TN). After two years of study, health issues left me hard of hearing. I transferred to The College of William and Mary (Williamsburg VA) to study neuroscience, interested in learning about hearing and hearing loss. As an undergraduate researcher at Willian and Mary, I designed and built a pattern electroretinogram (pERG) because of my audio engineering background knowledge in electronics and signal processing. I completed a postbaccalaureate fellowship at the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD/NIH, Bethesda MD). Here my project was to characterize utricular hair cell lineage (vestibular system) and identify key developmental time points for later analysis.I completed my PhD in the Speech and Hearing, Bioscience and Technology program at Harvard University (Boston MA) in 2022. My dissertation was on the characterization and comparison of electrophysiological responses to acoustical, optical, and electric stimulation in a mouse model of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI). The ABI is an auditory neural implant that is used when a cochlear implant (CI) cannot, by targeting the cochlear nucleus of the brainstem. Currently, patients that receive ABIs achieve poorer outcomes (speech comprehension) compared to patients that receive CIs. Working side by side with clinical ABI specialists in the Lee/Brown lab (Mass Eye and Ear), my goal was to better understand how the ABI stimulates the brain to improve patient outcomes. In my postdoc, at the Stanford University Department of Otolaryngology (Stanford CA), I built and managed new electrophysiology systems that test for ABRs, DPOAEs, and multiunit responses as well as a noise exposure setup for rodents. In my free time I enjoy 3D printing, coding, and robotics (Arduinos). I consider myself a “techniques guy” and love the challenge of building new tools.
