Stephen Mclaughlin is a Principal Engineer at SplitSecure. He possess expertise in python, algorithms, software engineering, distributed systems, c++. Colleagues describe him as "Steve is that rare combination of super intelligence and amazing heart. He not only is a talented and outstanding security engineer but also an incredible human. He has helped me grow intellectually and I am glad to know such a great person. I have known Steve for over 7 years. I got to know Steve when I was working at Samsung Research America. He was one of the distinguished PHD’s working in the KNOX security team. He and his team were able to build advanced kernel and secure boot protections for Samsung which surpassed what Google provided in their operating system. Eventually, Google saw so much value in what the KNOX team produced that they asked for most of the KNOX code base to be shared with the Android operating system. I was able to witness his technical prowess when working with him on different projects: Samsung Pay, Machine Learning Engine evaluation, and ESL Class. When working on Samsung Pay, Steve was my main interface into the KNOX team to keep track of the evaluations that were occurring with 3rd party security assessors and their internal security assessments of the payment logic/flows. He took the initiative to manage this process and keep track of all evaluations, their results and ensured that appropriate controls in place to mitigate the identified risks. I also worked with him on a security evaluation of a machine learning solution. His curiosity and ability to quickly dial into new environments allowed us to find falsified benchmark results on top of traditional security vulnerabilities. Finally, I asked him to help out with a work club geared towards English for Non-Native Speakers. He was very engaging and picked exercises which were fun and got the students involved. Although I have not worked with Steve on Fuzzers, I have heard about his advanced research on fuzzers for secure elements and trusted execution environments. Building web fuzzers is one level of complexity but building security fuzzing tools for secure elements and trusted execution environments is orders of magnitudes more complex and demanding in skillset. You have to understand the nuances of attacking secure elements and trusted execution environments as well as how they operate and what attack surface they provide. But being extremely talented is only one facet of Steve’s being. Steve is an incredible human being. Steve is someone that may be a bit aloof at first, but when he gets to know you, he gives of himself completely. I think it is due to his upbringing and influence of his parents always supporting others who were less fortunate. Whatever the cause, Steve is the most caring and supportive person I know. He sees the good in you and helps you know it. He also has a great sense of humor. He sees the quirky things in life that make you laugh.
