About Stephen Murphy

Applied wildlife biologist. Working with great people to put conservation science into action. At Conservation Partners we recognise and value the importance of primary production in the Australian rangelands. We strive to find common ground between production and conservation. To do this we:● We work with landholders that manage significant conservation values. ● We raise money to develop and implement threat abatement programs to maintain or enhance those values. ● We are guided by existing Recovery Plans, Conservation Advices and expert opinion. ● We fill knowledge gaps using good science. We measure response with robust monitoring. ● This is all done within an adaptive management framework.HISTORY:We started in 2019 implementing a threat abatement plan for Golden Shouldered-Parrots on Artemis Station. The work followed recommendations of successive recovery plans that were never properly implemented. We are kicking goals and can prove it. See https://conservationpartners.org.au/artemis/golden-shouldered-parrots/In 2022 we began working with BirdLife Australia, Cape York NRM, several working cattle stations and and some of the Cape's First Nations groups to search for the Critically Endangered Buff-breasted Button-quail. The search for this highly imperilled bird continues... See https://conservationpartners.org.au/cape-york-button-quail-3/In 2023, we expanded our practical conservation model further, with a new threat abatement and applied research on Chidna Station north of Mt Isa. In the words of Chidna owner Brussie Spreadborough "it's wild, rough country". See https://conservationpartners.org.au/chidna-station/In 2024, we began working with several land-holders in western Queensland to search for Night Parrots, and mitigate threats. There are almost certainly undiscovered populations that will benefit from threat abatement. See https://conservationpartners.org.au/night-parrot/CURRENT POSITION:● Chief exec and wildlife manager at "Conservation Partners Aust. Pty Ltd". CP is registered with the The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission as an environmental charity and has Deductible Gift Recipient Status with the ATO. We put conservation science into action (www.conservationpartners.org.au)OTHER POSITIONS:● Director and consultant - Adaptive NRM Pty Ltd (www.anrm.com.au)● BirdLife Australia Research and Conservation Committee● Night Parrot Pullen-Pullen Management Advisory Committee● Carpentarian Grasswren Recovery Team
