Mogadishu, Banaadir, Somalia

Save the Children’s Strengthened Protection and Resilience for Adolescent Girls in Jubbaland (SPRAJ) project in Jubbaland region of Somalia operated within the social protection and child protection nexus. The projects aim was to build resilience of the IDP and host communities in Kismayu as well as address child protection challenges (child labour, child neglect, child marriage and lifeskills) faced by adolescent girls in the IDP camps. As the evaluation consultant on the SPRAJ endline evaluation, I led the development of the inception report, data collection tools, data analysis and evaluation report development. More importantly, the evaluation methodology followed consists of both mixed methods approaches as well as outcome harvesting. I undertook contribution analysis and outcome tracing to assess SPRAJ’s project contribution to mapped outcomes.

This assignment involved mapping, selection, and strategies for adopting Greener cooking solutions under the clean cooking pillar of the LIFT project implemented in Marsabit, Turkana and Samburu counties. The assessment is hinged on four approaches; landscape analysis to understand the context, adoption barriers, and existing clean cooking solutions as well as market players, select locally acceptable clean cooking solutions, develop a social behavior change (SBC) strategy and finally develop a roadmap for BOMA to work with existing groups and dealers to intensify adoption of clean cooking strategies, strengthen market systems and grow local clean cooking businesses.

• Supported the review and contextualization of the WE4F M&E plan to align to grant-level changes. • Supported the review of Results Based Financing (RBF) agreements and tracking of grant disbursements with respect to stipulated conditions in the grant contracts. • Supported the development and implementation of milestone verification methodology for Results Based Management of innovator milestones in six WE4F focus countries (Rwanda, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia).• Convened capacity building sessions (online and physical) with Innovators on the RBF implementation process, procedures for reporting and funds disbursement, review of milestones and milestone reports and schedule of verification. • Supported impact monitoring for 15 innovators engaged in renewable energy (solar cooling, water pumps, home systems and hydro-power), agri-tech, and organic fertilizer development. • Supported the planning of WE4F end-line evaluation in collaboration with GIZ and Bayesian consultants, end-line evaluation report development and overall WE4F annual report. • Contributed to the development of adhoc, yearly and final WE4F program reports through the M&E sections, learning and recommendations, analysis and presentation. • Led the development and documentation of Learning and human impact stories from end-users to document the impact of WE4F’s project implementation. • Liason with WE4F partners (GIZ, Bayesian) to build synergies in performance measurement and implementation of the program.

Mandera

Technical proposal development and implementation for the evaluation to determine the Impact of the IETC’s Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT) interventions in the six Mandera sub counties in which RACIDA was implementing the Integrated emergency response to the triple crisis of drought, COVID-19, and desert locusts in Mandera County (IETC) project. The objective was to assess the food security status of the beneficiaries after implementation of the Unconditional Cash Transfer and measure the impact in line with the results framework. A mixed methods approach supported by a Probability Proportionate to Size (PPS) sampling approach was deployed for this evaluation.

• Supported development of project wide MEL plan as well as grantee specific SMART indicators and targets for their grants with an emphasis on crosscutting themes of gender inclusivity and youth. • Supported development M&E related SOPs and manuals in the areas of data cleaning, data analysis, database operation and grantee data collection and processing.• Reviewed and validated grantee milestone & quarterly reports ensuring indicator performance against targets is correctly cited before milestone approval through set verification criteria.• Performed regular M&E capacity building for grantees to enhance their knowledge of M&E systems and tools, as well as project SOPs.• Supported periodic USAID project DQAs, as well as performing regular project internal DQAs.• Supported regular project monitoring with grantees and annual evaluation of the KDCMS project • Supported the convening learning events with KCDMS grantees and stakeholders in Nyanza Region to support cross-learning across grantees as well as harvest project learning outcomes.

Many are the times data are collected from project beneficiaries, trial sites and other study populations and little or no feedback is given to them. This leads to resentment and general apathy amongst research populations towards researchers and research(scientific or social). This is the main problem that the Large-N trials project sought to remedy in addition to finding effective ways to improve the data management cycle by involving all research stakeholders.My role involved seeking pathways to effective, timely and lean data collection and management with farmers and developing testing platforms through which actionable and meaningful processed information is shared with farmers as feedback. The platform was to be scalable and adaptable to different farmers/researcher/organisation needs. To this end, I led the development of the Closed Data Loop application for quick data processing and presentation, as well as the development and roll out of instant soil health clinics with farmers reaching more than 500 farmers. I oversaw the set up of paired comparison trial plots with farmers deciding the treatments/technologies to compare in groups. These activities encouraged farmer participation and buyin as their input was sought and considered, as well as gaining valuable information and advice about their soil at no cost to them.
