We develop and support legislation to protect Connecticut's uniquely strong Freedom of Information laws. We are supporting a Program to empower student journalists to take advantage of that gateway to information.

I counsel students and while conceivng and leading a series of conferences that included how to strengthen local and regional journalism in an expanding digital media ecosystem and possible responses to the reluctance of educators and courts to recognize the First Amendment rights of student speakers and journalists.

I covered the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Department, Congress and the CIA. The late Chief Justice Warren Burger sat with me for his first long form television interview.

I led efforts to open state and federal courtrooms to camera and microphone coverage. We began when only two states granted limited access. Now, 49 states have broadened electronic media access to their legal proceedings. I conceived and created, with Media Professional in Kansas City, the NAB Libel and First Amendment Insurance Plan to lessen the fear of broadcasters from costly litigation when they engage in courageous journalism. My colleagues elected me to chair the Joint Washington Media Committee, a coalition of newspaper, magazine and book publishers together with broadcast and cable interests to ally and respond to legal threats to First Amendment prerogatives. Much of my work involved educating and counseling member editors, journalists and senior managers about the breadth of opportunities afforded by First Amendment law to engage in enterprising coverage.
