I work as part of a team developing firmware for a home security panel (primarily in C++11 with several smaller components written in C and sh). The project involves significant teamwork, including design and code reviews to ensure we meet the requirements of a safety-critical device. To enhance code quality, I drove the expansion of unit tests, code coverage reports, and static analysis. I also participate in the architecture review team and lead training to bring developers with varying degrees of experience up to speed with modern techniques and tools.

I was the lead developer of an access control system for the firm's production Unix environment. This new system reduced operational risk and provided more precise activity tracking when compared with the existing access control software. The implementation included authentication plugins, parsing kernel audit logs, and a set of C++ command-line tools that provided functionality for end users (e.g., temporary privilege escalation similar to sudo). The project also included a set of lightweight scripts to verify a host is configured correctly and the controls could not be bypassed. In addition, I acted as the primary maintainer for the legacy access control software to ensure systems that could not be upgraded would continue to meet regulatory requirements.In addition to my development work, I helped ensure the health of my team’s operating environment (primarily Linux). These responsibilities included automating monitoring and alerting for production hosts, streamlining installation and configuration of software, assisting with product resiliency, and replacing manual server administration tasks with scripts.

I worked as part of a small team developing interconnectivity protocols in C. The software could be compiled for an embedded environment, thus requiring tools like Valgrind to optimize memory usage; data structures and algorithms were selected with embedded requirements in mind. As efficiency was a primary goal, profilers were used to analyze bottlenecks in our libraries and increase the total throughput. Core algorithms were designed in an abstract way, allowing for flexibility and specialization without extensive refactoring. In addition to participating in the C implementation, I performed integration testing and assisted our server and client teams (Java and C#) as necessary. Peer reviews of our protocol specifications were performed to remove ambiguities and design deficiencies as early as possible.
