Talks" --- Confronting the ills (and I.L.L.s) of the World: The Lab hosts a series of symposia dedicated to transdisciplinary knowledge-sharing and sensemaking, aimed at confronting 'wicked' glocal (local and global) problems. The format of each "I.L.L. Talk" is informal and relaxed, a true roundtable inviting full and focused participation in each instance, among a select group of invited researchers, educators, social and tech entrepreneurs, and thought partners. Applied scholarship is our goal, as we aim to use these knowledge-creation sessions to help guide and inspire integrated, ethically grounded tech development, more effective and transparent leadership, new approaches to data sovereignty, and support for marginalized communities.. Since joining ASU I have designed and taught IDS 313 (Coffee in Global History), OGL 360 (Assessment of Leadership Effectiveness), OGL 365 (Leaders in Film), IDS 313 (The Cultural and Chemical History of Beer), OGL 343 (Social Processes in Organizations), and --- for our new Masters of Science program --- OGL 571 (Advanced Leadership Assessment). Prior to joining ASU I created unique courses in Anthropology, Mexican American History and Culture, Cultural Geography, Earth Science: Weather & Climate, World Regional Geography, and Latin American Geography, as well as courses on the intersections between media and culture. I have led unique and innovative Study Abroad programs in Ireland, Peru, and Bolivia while also founding and coordinating the Teaching Innovations Exchange (TIE) association in my faculty unit, which has led to numerous advances in innovative and effective teaching. Shortly after joining ASU I began coaching the Academic Bowl team of the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) while also serving on various curricular, graduate studies, standards, and search committees. My research interests include leadership in communities; the "Big History" of coffee and beer; faith-based activism in movements for social change; animal ethics; activists concerned with climate change; and the roles of women and new immigrants in the social-justice oriented and inclusive branches of the U.S. Catholic Church. I engage with anthropologies of immigration, religion, and social movements through a variety of interdisciplinary lenses, including cultural anthropology and geography (of South America, Central America, and North America), as well as perspectives on globalization as it pertains to cultural geography, cultural anthropology, and physical anthropology.

In my spare time, I am researching books on "Big History" and anthropology, and I participate in the Tucson Literary Salon for science fiction writers.

As the editor for Latin American Geography and part of a team dedicated to the revision of World Geography (including national, regional, and local coverage of culture, politics, history, and physical features), I commissioned, edited, and/or wrote hundreds of articles for the encyclopedia and its associated publications (Britannica Online; the Britannica Book of the Year; the Merriam-Webster World Almanac; the EB Children's Encyclopedia, etc.).

Full-time editorial position focused on the writing and revision of articles and article-clusters in various works, chiefly the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Britannica CD and DVD sets, and Britannica Online. Under the interdisciplinary aegis of “EB Geography” were countries, regions, and myriad articles of combined historical, socioeconomic, political, and scientific interest.

Full-time position involving the annual revision of Encyclopaedia Britannica and Britannica Online. This encyclopedic work combined topics and perspectives from the fields of geography, history, sociology, anthropology, economics, politics, the physical sciences, religious studies, and literary studies.

Research and fact-checking based on correspondence with readers (via phone calls, emails, and letters) regarding errors and outdated material. The work required basic research via libraries, online sources, and personal contacts, as well as the review and revision of articles, maps, scientific illustrations, and artwork. Editorial C&R research included, but was not limited to, entries on the Armenian Massacres, fuzzy logic, Ceuta, astronomy, Earth’s atmospheric “budget” for solar radiation, the elevation of Mount Everest, U.S. casualties in the Civil War and the World Wars, the lengths of major world rivers, excavations at Pompeii, the valence of atoms, polar exploration, plate tectonics, and the legend of “Caligula’s horse.”I began my Britannica career as a new hire in the Correspondence & Research Department under the experienced and inspired management of Helen Carlock. It was a dream come true for a student of the liberal arts, and thanks to the opportunity to revise articles on history, chemistry, world geography, physics, the solar radiation budget, musical instruments, Caligula's horse, and a host of other topics, I became a dedicated encyclopedist. Amid a whirlwind of change within the industry, I also participated (in various small ways) in the early adventures of Britannica Online.
