About Stephen Pearson

An energy industry professional with over thirty years’ experience in health, safety, security, environmental and social performance management. Experienced at working at all levels in an organization from Board and Executive Directors, Government Representatives, operations personnel and contracted support companies. Since the start of 2020, I have been working with clients at Executive and Board level to help them understand their legal obligations and how they, as leaders, can effect positive change in the way safety is defined and managed. These very rich conversations are based on the Due Diligence framework for senior officers, requiring them to know the significant hazards within their business; understand how these are being eliminated or controlled and the value that a clear and concise management system can play in this; and how to test the effectiveness of critical controls through sound assurance and verification processes. The additional step of how to learn well when things do not go right (and also when they do go right) includes challenging the of use of lagging metrics. Related to this, the recent industrial manslaughter provisions in WHS legislation in Australia have invariably led to challenges to investigation processes and these can provide opportunities to be better at learning and managing the outcomes of unwanted events. Key personal qualities include drive to achieve business performance improvements, working effectively with multidisciplinary teams and delivery to tight deadlines. Other qualities include a positive attitude and collaborative style for delivery both individually and within a team environment.Client sectors in which I have been working as Pearson Advisory include energy/oil and gas; power generation and distribution; agriculture (including labour hire) and Regulatory bodies in Queensland.

Listed skills include Safety Management Systems, Occupational Health, Gas, Workplace Safety, and 18 others.

With a functional link to the Santos Corporate ESH Team the role also provides embedded HSS resources across GLNG to support to line management in implementing and maintaining compliance with the Santos EHSMS.A key area of direct support to the GLNG leadership has been building a due diligence programme based around the three tenets of 'clear and concise management system expectations - a culture of line accountability for safety which is monitored - the investigation of incidents with a fair oversight based on consequence of the activity being investigated'.A major success that I have been instrumental in developing is enhancing contract safety management within the industry through the formation of Safer Together (safertogether.com.au). This forum has been developed by industry leaders to drive safety performance improvement including safety leadership collaboration. In the three years it has been in Operating the recordable injury frequency rate has fallen continually and the high potential incident rate has fallen by almost 50% in that time frame.

Jan 2012 - Jun 2012

General Manager Hsse

Brisbane, Australia

QGC is a rapidly growing CSG business expanding at a massive rate to deliver the $15bn project as well as management of a materiel gas production and supply business. In charge if a team of 8 direct reports and 30+ functional reports in the HSSE arena. Not a complex operation but a huge challenge to drive culture change over a land area operation the size of the UK. Very rewarding when you see the changes deliver good results. Challenging community and Regulatory environment where understanding of each others positions is vital to engaging in sustainable solutions.

Aug 2009 - Dec 2011

Manager Sustainable Development

Managing the development of the KPO sustainable development programme across the venture. Key aspects were developing alignment within the partnership on the SD values and delivery in the areas of HSSE, economic development in the region and the human resource development. The role was challenging considering the location of the projects in western Kazakhstan and the requirement to manage the development of the multi billion dollar proposed development including the management of the ESIA.

Apr 2008 - Jul 2009

Environment Manager

Karachaganak Petroleum Operation (Kpo) (Bg Group Jv)

Managing a team of over 30 enviroenmental specialist form within Kazakhstan and international locations on a 28 day rotation pattern. The working environment was challenging with summer to winter temperature swing of +40C to -35C. The development was in a remote part of Western Kazakhstan 150km from Uralsk. The role was to manage the developing environmental agenda and manage the interface with the local and national environmental regulators. A key success was to oversee the huge reduction in flaring from the venture and also to implement the programme of international certification to ISO 14001. Community engagement issues on HSE matters saw both proactive engagement on our performance as well as reactive management of issue with pressure groups involving the World Bank via the Russian investment company. Working with Russian neighbours, as we were only 20km for the Russian Oblast of Orenburg, also added a dimension of cross border politics and environmental stewardship. A final success prior to moving to QGC was the delivery of the first sustainability report for KPO and one of the first in Kazakhstan. This was an important milestone in publicly stating the facts on the impacts and plans for the current and planned developments of the social arena within the Asset.

Aug 2004 - Apr 2008

Hsse Manager

Bg Trinidad And Tobago

Managing a team of 6 HSSE staff directly in this diverse and developing Asset with offshore facilities, onshore LNG terminals and onshore acreage. Huge learning for me moving to my first Asset role where frontline risks were evident. Key aspects included SIMOPS drilling on the gas production platform. Safety case and risk controls were recognised by the T&T Govt with a Prime Ministers award for safety resulting in raising the bar on this aspect of safety management. Security issues post 9/11 were very apparent with the T&T island receiving close support by the US Govt and Coastguard. A proposed new county entry for Venezuela was supported out of T&T for the ket HSSE risks including emergency response and country evacuation planning - made all the more interesting when Pd Chavez was 'deposed' for a few short days. Community issues came to the fore with the approvals process for a new project requiring community sign off. This is where I received the full appreciation for sustainability and social performance aspects of the business.Developed the first BG Group Asset public safety and environmental report aimed at both local readership as well satisfying 'Corporate' assurance needs.
