Carrying out research and teaching in a number of areas of information services management, and taking an active part in national and international policy initiatives, particularly in areas of research dissemination and publishing, and research data management. Research interests focusing on scholarly communication, digital information resources management, and information-related policies in organisations. Recently, this has included work on open-access publishing and dissemination, research data management, and digital repository development, working at the intersection between technology deployment, organisational policy development, and cultural practices, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Teaching interests include a number of areas of information and library management.

Responsible for leading and managing a large 'converged' IT and library service operating across the University of Nottingham's UK, China and Malaysia campuses, providing services to support about 40,000 students and 5000 staff. Delivering technology infrastructure, core IT services, corporate information systems, learning technology services, media services, library and archive collections, digital library services, library and IT spaces, and user support and training. Founding Director of Nottingham's Centre for Research Communications.

Founding Director of SHERPA, a set of projects and services to support global open-access scholarly communication. Role undertaken alongside other senior management roles at Nottingham.

Member of the Board of Directors of the non-profit making company delivering the network for higher education institutions, East Midlands Metropolitan Network. Chair of the Board, 2011-2012.
