  STEPHEN G. POULOS was the Chief Engineer and Product Development Director for General Motors' Fuel Cell System. Previously he had global responsibility for product design and development of GM’s eAssist mild hybrid and its battery electric propulsion systems. Mr. Poulos joined General Motors in 1982 as a Research Engineer in the GM Research Laboratories. After nine years working on a wide variety of applied engine R&D projects, he transferred to an advanced engineering team developing concept hybrid vehicles. There he led programs that successfully demonstrated a “power-assist” hybrid minivan as well as an automotive flywheel energy storage system in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In addition, Mr. Poulos led the SAE industry/government task force that developed the now widely used J1711 recommended practice for exhaust emissions and fuel economy testing of hybrid vehicles. In 1996, he transferred to GM Powertrain where he was later appointed Powertrain Chief Engineer for the Silverado/Sierra Hybrid full-size pickup, which was introduced in 2004 as the first light-duty hybrid from a North American OEM. Subsequently, he took on additional responsibility for GM’s belt-alternator starter (BAS) mild hybrid system, first introduced in 2006 in the Saturn Vue Green Line and later rolled out to four other vehicles, including the Buick LaCrosse Eco Hybrid, GM’s first production hybrid vehicle built and sold in the China market. Mr. Poulos then led development of GM’s eAssist light electrification propulsion system introduced in the 2012 Buick LaCrosse and later rollout out globally. This was the first time in the automotive industry that a mild hybrid system was standard in a mainstream high-volume vehicle. He also served as Chief Engineer for the all-electric propulsion systems in the Chevrolet Spark EV and the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Most recently he was the GM Chief Engineer for the GM/Honda Gen2 fuel cell system.
