Director Of Systems EngineeringOrbcomm May 2016 - PresentRochelle Park, New Jersey, UsCurrent:Conceptualizer, architect and technical lead for ORBCOMM's next generation global OGX (IoT) satellite service (key service improvements include 50% higher efficiency, 8x lower power operation and 40x faster/larger data). >Responsibilities (partial list) include designing, defining and documenting specifications (including physical layer, network layer, modem hardware, type approval), coordinating the implementation across multiple inter-disciplinary internal/external teams, and managing multi-million dollars contracts.Technical authority for existing 500k+ subscriber global IDP satellite network. >Responsibilities include capacity analysis and traffic control, network expansion, deployment, troubleshooting and remediation, terminal design and type approval.Past:Architect, technical lead and product manager for a $10M mixed signal ASIC projectSystem architect for the associated ASIC-based satellite terminal>Responsibilities included designing both the ASIC (a full-duplex direct upconversion, low-IF downconversion L-band (1.5-1.6GHz) transceiver with significant configurability to allow for a large range of narrow-band signals (BPSK to 64QAM, 2kHz to 200kHz bandwidths)) and the complete modem architecture to required performance specifications, designing and vetting the digital algorithms being developed on the silicon in MATLAB, vetting the RF architecture and performance, establishing production level test requirements, developing hardware and software test infrastructure and providing ongoing technical guidance to the engineering team during the ASIC implementation stage of modem development. -
Senior Market AnalystOrbcomm Sep 2012 - May 2016Rochelle Park, New Jersey, Us> Responsibilities included analysis of competitor solutions (hardware and software) and research of market opportunities. Reverse engineered multiple satellite systems, networks and hardware in order to determine competitor weaknesses and direct future product and marketing strategy. Developed technical documentation and marketing collateral (webinars, seminars, data sheets, case studies, presentations), and assisted in new product business case planning. Interfaced with industry market analysts/experts, attended tradeshows and conferences, participated in company strategy sessions. -
Senior Dsp EngineerSkywave Mobile Communications Oct 2010 - Sep 2012Ottawa, Ontario, Ca>Responsibilities included the design and implementation of a low data rate BPSK/OQPSK satellite modem. -
Firmware EngineerRbr Ltd. Aug 2009 - Oct 2010Ottawa, Ontario, Ca>Responsibilities included the design, implementation and testing of a very low power, high precision ocean (sensor) logger, and a very low power underwater modem. Logger work of note included designing an extremely low-overhead file system for use with a NAND memory (incl wear leveling), introducing an RTOS and implementing a USB driver for serial communications. Modem work includeddesigning the modem physical/link layer protocol, user interface and executing a complete test plan. Thorough documentation of capabilities in code and through application notes. -
Patent AnalystGlobal Intellectual Strategies Jul 2007 - Aug 2009>Responsibilities included providing technical analyses in the areas of memories, processors and systems. Performed claim interpretations, infringement opinions, prior art searches. Participated in R&D programs, including a semi-automated reverse engineering project and a project to implement a company owned patent. Wrote patent agent exams in 2009. Moderated a workshop at the Licensing Executive Society (LES) Meeting.

Senior Embedded Software/Dsp EngineerTranscore Jun 2005 - Jul 2007Beaverton, Or, Us>Responsibilities included the design, implementation and testing of a dual mode, very low SNR OQPSK/BPSK satellite modem as well as producing application firmware for asset-tracking products. Satellite modem work included signal acquisition and demodulation algorithms, turbo and convolutional code FEC, peripheral HW drivers, MATLAB simulation, benchmarking and optimization through assembly code and internal memory management. Application code included designing an API between the modem and surrounding applications with the real time kernel MicroC/OS-II, providing a user interface, and implementing messaging and network protocols. Thorough documentation of work in the form of design, technical and performance documents. -
Dsp/Embedded Software EngineerWi-Sys Communications Jan 2003 - Jun 2005>Responsibilities included the design and implementation of the company's main GPS radio-modem product. Radio modem work included the design of a dual mode FSK/AFSK modem, signal acquisition and demodulation algorithms, performance evaluation, MATLAB simulation, benchmarking and optimization. Application code included an extensive configurable serial user interface, network protocol implementation, waypoints and tracking, event logging. Design of link layer, serial communication and network protocols. Small startup experience (<10 people).
-
Dsp EngineerSigem Jan 2002 - Jan 2003>Responsibilities included the development of a highly sensitive satellite digital receiver. Receiver was designed to be capable of demodulating BPSK, QPSK and OQPSK signals using a remodulator architecture which included a digital PLL with adaptive filtering and novel bit synchronization. Implemented and characterized through simulation and numerical analyses in MATLAB; theoretical results were calculated and verified with the experimental results. Complete documentation and presentation as final thesis.
-
Rf EngineerVistar Apr 2000 - Oct 2001Za>Responsibilities included testing and design support of two satellite L-band mobile terminals. Designed and implemented a high power transmit/receive network for a mobile satellite terminal. Support duties included resolving manufacturing issues such as test fixture calibration and qualification, and providing solutions to production line yield problems. Very experienced in the diagnosis of RF hardware, including synthesizers, modulators, low noise amplifiers, power amplifiers, and the use of all RF test equipment.
