This role is complex and cannot be explained well in so few words. Suffice to say that it was fundamentally facilitating the running and ongoing viability of a not-for-profit cafe in order to teach inexperienced individuals in a positive, safe and inclusive environment that successfully reached an ~70-75% of individuals gaining and retaining employment.This viability necessitated understanding various aspects of intrinsic hospitality, cafe and specialty coffee culture within australia, especially due to the nearby alternatives. Initially Volunteering for work experience myself, I transitioned into a management role under the mentorship of Ruthmary Bond; wherein I discovered a passion for systems efficiency, but also in teaching and upskilling staff across a variety of societal backgrounds.This included partnerships with Barkuma, Uniting Communities, Royal Society for the Blind, Education Department SA and others to deliver inclusive, respectful and differentiated learning experiences.As I grew within the role, this extended to menu design and costing, as well as quality control and staff training. Indeed, my love for coffee and teaching blossomed in this role, as I taught within a RASR model- Reality, Abstract, Science, Reality- a way to help people understand why they were learning what they were learning.The other facet of this was the development of my management and leadership skills, to not be the best person at any job; but to delegate and empower others to be effective parts of a team. I left the role near 2016's end in order to commence full-time studies and welcome the birth of my first child.
