Profile bio

About Stephen R.

I am recent graduate of English Literature and History in Trinity College Dublin, with extremely strong research and written communication skills acquired over the course of my college education. I was an engaged and high-performing student, achieving First-Class Honours in my degree. My presentation and verbal communication skills are exceptionally strong, honed over many years of public speaking, stage performance and singing and fed by a enduring love of performance and total comfort presenting for or interacting with an audience, whether in scripted or non-scripted settings. For example, I was Valedictorian for the Blackrock College Class of 2018, coached debating in Blackrock for 3 years after leaving school and frequently present as part of my degree and with in Trinity College Historical Society events. I would love for my career after completing my education to feature plenty of presentation work. Alongside my interpersonal skills, I truly believe presentation is my strongest attribute and honing my ability to present information in an entertaining, interesting and easy to absorb manner remains a key passion of mine.I have plenty of experience in working as part of a team. I have worked in a variety of roles involving close co-ordination with others. These include a paid STEAM Fellowship with the UCD Innovation Academy in 2018-19, work as an Activity Leader with ATC Language Schools in 2019 and 2022, and also as a Laboratory Aide with Eurofins Biomnis in 2021. I am a strong believer in the value of being easy to work with and getting along well with co-workers, as this always makes for a more effective and enjoyable workflow. As Senior Member of Committee for Trinity CHS, I became experienced in setting and maintaining a changing work rota week to week, which taught me the value of clear and consistent communication when working alongside larger groups of people.I also have a love of volunteering, I've always found these to be the most personally fulfilling roles I have performed. This includes three years working as ward support on the Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from 2017-19, which I would have continued if not for the Covid pandemic preventing it from taking place for the last three years. I have also done a lot of work with Trinity Vincent de Paul, as an Activity Leader in after-school clubs and volunteering in Trinity Club, a social club run for vulnerable adults. Particularly when other aspects of my life become stressful, these are excellent ways to decompress and regain a sense of purpose in everything I do.

The first is a focus on student welfare. The SMC is the main point of contact for the general members of committee, and is responsible for ensuring they can enjoy and fully optimize their time spent on Committee according to the amount of time and energy they were each willing and able to commit. This was the most rewarding aspect of the job for me, and I took great pride in getting to know the members and facilitate them getting as much out of their time on committee as possible. This taught me strong conflict resolution skills, as well as the importance of creating a comfortable and welcoming working environment. The second aspect was ensuring the committee's tasks got done each week by maintaining a rota, particularly focused around ensuring the weekly debate and the receptions before and after went smoothly. I learned the importance of effective delegation here, as I would often try to complete much of the work myself but soon realised this was extremely difficult to maintain week to week without the aid of the other Committee members. The role was a real test of my people management skills, but I found it extremely rewarding and enjoyable to manage a team in this way. It taught me the importance of fostering an environment in which the team all wanted to help each other and enjoyed each others' company, which is a skill I hope to carry forward to any workplace or social setting in which I find myself going forward. I co-ordinated a team of trackers in maintaining a strong communication network and keeping a consistently updated spreadsheet between the group so that all the relevant information was available to everyone over the course of the event.Besides this, I also worked alongside the three Directors in planning the course which the teams would need to follow, alongside the puzzles, clues and challenges which they would need to complete throughout the event. The runners needed to travel throughout Ireland, and so this took a long time to carefully plan out, to ensure that the route was complex and challenging for the runners, while still being easily understood and fun to complete.I was also heavily involve din the planning of our November 2022 event, 'Mini Jailbreak', which condensed the Jailbreak experience to a single afternoon across the campus of Trinity College campus. This also required puzzles and challenges to be created, as well as a coherent route, which prevented teams from overlapping and simply following each other, and incentives for teams to keep running even after the race was finished. My main role was to ensure the care and continued English language immersion of students when they were not in classes. This took many forms; from refereeing sports, to leading walking tours around the city, to teaching workshops on photography or vlogging.UCD is an extremely large campus, and the operation run by ATC was very large. At the height of the summer, there were around 700-800 students on campus, requiring care and attention. This required constant focus by the Activity Leaders, as well as strong bonds of trust between quite a large group of workers. Since I was one of a few who had performed the job before the pandemic, in a role which would normally have seen quite a high level of staff retention summer on summer, I took on a leadership role among the Activity Leaders, guiding their interactions with both the students and the group leaders, and advising on how to manage aspects such as full day trips with the students across the country or what parts of Dublin city to visit while leading a walking tour.Activity Leaders were also the main point of contact between the group leaders who had accompanied the students and the company itself. As such, we would often find ourselves dealing with complaints regarding issues we knew very little about. An ability to calmly and reasonably deal with belligerent or upset group leaders was extremely valuable over the course of the work. Show less

Laboratory Aide

Sandyford, County Dublin, Ireland

I was part of the team responsible for registration, labelling and checking of samples referred to Eurofins Biomnis for medical laboratory testing. This was done wearing PPE and working with the samples under a fume hood in order to maintain safe handling of potentially contagious samples of Covid-19 tests. This was done in shifts of up to 7 or 8 lab aides at any given time, and as such strong communication skills were vital, as well as a pressure to perform to a high standard at all times. Whenever a mistake occurred, for example forgetting to label a sample with the correct barcode for later identification, it meant that the rest of the shift would need to stop their own work to help rectify the issue. This led to increased and maintained focus throughout the shift, as well as an awareness of the need to take personal responsibility if the mistake happened to be mine. The issue would be discovered either way, taking responsibility quickly allowed the group to focus down our search and rectify the problem more easily. An ability to prioritize was also vital, as there were multiple roles which a Lab Aide could perform at any given time, and knowing where I was most useful to maximize the efficiency of the system in place was extremely important. This also required calmness under pressure, as the volumes of tests arriving at once were often at the outer limits of what the system in place was equipped to handle in an acceptable timeframe.Sample needed to be carefully tracked throughout, in order to ensure that results were paired with the correct tests before being sent back to the clients. This required a level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel in order to track the tests on site at any given time, as well as to ensure our barcode scans were inputted correctly. Show less

It was easier for me to engage with many students who I had known when I was in school than it was for the full time teachers I worked alongside, while I also was able to assist in explaining to them more clearly what students might struggle with regarding certain aspects of the activity. However, I also had occasional difficulty in asserting myself and keeping control of the lessons, something which improved as I gained experience in the role and earned more trust from the students year on year.My specialty as a debater was always my rhetoric and oratory skills, and it was these, and the accompanying increase in confidence speaking to an audience, which I tried to pass on. I gained a real passion for helping students to find their voices, in much the same way that debating in an open and relaxed school environment allowed me to do so when I was younger. As such, particularly when working with students who visibly gained in confidence throughout the year, I found the work extremely rewarding. Show less

The National College of Ireland campus in which we were based lacked a sports field, for instance, so we would often take the students up to Merrion Square in order to play football or frisbee with them. Similarly, issues would often arise while on a tour or playing sport in which the ALs were the authority figures, but had little experience or knowledge to rely upon in order to deal with emergencies. for example, one child was injured playing football and our first aid kit was missing some inventory while the office was closed and locked so another could not be fetched. My solution was to find a nearby pub and ask for ice in order to hold against the student's swelling ankle. Situations like this were frequent, and quick thinking was a necessity.Activity Leaders were also the main point of contact between the group leaders who had accompanied the students and the company itself.
