Through his work, he continues to reaffirm that Tribal archives stand as monuments to the traditional knowledge systems and age-old institutions which have sustained the cultural memories of Tribal peoples.Stephen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of Arizona with a focus on archival practices and methodologies. Director Of Digital ArchivesNational Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition Oct 2019 - May 2024Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul AreaResponsible for the visionary direction to build, data model, web develop, manage, and launch the National Indian Boarding School Digital Archive (NIBSDA) digital collections online platform as an infrastructure of truth-telling. Created and refined workflows regarding digitization, organization, preservation, and storage activities. Designed, implemented, refined, and upheld NIBSDA's policies and procedures regarding selection, scanning, processing, cataloging, and accessing archival collections including creating data sharing memoranda of understanding, informed consent release forms and methodologies, and developing data sovereignty protocols. Created training materials and video tutorials products for remote transcription, onsite scanning standard operating procedures, oral history video editing tables, and data entry protocol and best practices regarding cataloging, reference resource authorship, controlled vocabulary construction, and mass data transformation. Tribal ArchivistMashpee Wampanoag Tribe | Tribal Historic Preservation Department Sep 2015 - Apr 2018483 Great Neck Rd S, Mashpee, Ma 02649As the first Tribal Archivist for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, I established a proactive collections development program (including acquisitions and outreach); collections management policies and other associated best practices; Collections Management System (CMS) acquisition and operation; and collection processing workflows regarding the intellectual and physical arrangement of primary source content. Managed, processed, and curated approximately 380 linear feet of format-neutral collections to the Tribal community. Operated in-house CuadraStar SKCA CMS to manage collections, create catalog records, and make collections discoverable in an online interface. Entered into formal discussions with outside archival institutions with the intention to secure meaningful relationships to share collections in relation to Mashpee Wampanoag history. Ancillary duties included: designed and administered digital preservation workflows (including the digitization of magnetic media and manuscripts as well the operation of Adobe Photoshop to create true digital surrogates); Webmaster to various social media platforms pertaining to the Tribal Historic Preservation Department in order to optimize the curation of tribal archival collections; Managed/trained archives staff and volunteers whose familiarity with archival practices and procedures range from minimal to none; Conducted tours for both community members and visiting professionals; Developed oral history audiovisual recordings of prominent individuals in the community; Wrote grants to finance long-term projects. -
Colonial North America Project FellowHarvard University Nov 2016 - Dec 2016Pusey Library, Harvard St, Cambridge, Ma 02138Research fellowship undertaken at Harvard Pusey Library on the behalf of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Archives in order to acquire a more nuanced knowledge of collections relevant to Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal history that are housed in the custody of off-site repositories, a detailed inventory of found collections was produced and included in a researcher’s guide to be published on the library website. Inventory was conducted by navigating the Omeka-based library catalog. Topographically transcribed identified manuscripts. Promoted Harvard University Archives collections and resources to Tribal community via inclusion of digital surrogates in the Tribal repository. -
