Mechanical Engineer
CurrentThermal hydraulic analyst providing safety posture recommendations for naval nuclear power plants. Conduct thermal-hydraulic analysis on nuclear reactors. Utilize knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and technical computer models to validate proposed designs and set design parameters. Perform analyses using computer codes to show no release of fission products to the environment during casualty conditions. Took the lead performing loss of coolant casualty analyses of the Moored Training Ship engine room. Performed energy and mass balance hand calculations to verify code results. Application of fundamental engineering theory to ensure modeled behavior is realistic. Organize and lead technical interchange meetings with stakeholders to obtain concurrence on analysis parameters and procedures. Prepare and present final results to design review committees.Structural analyst providing equipment design recommendations. Perform large deformation FEA using ABAQUS Explicit for dynamic impacts of Spent Nuclear Fuel shipping containers, as well as for irradiated reactor components. Involved in multi-disciplined design teams that developed, from concept design to final design, methods for packaging, transportation, and long-term disposal or irradiated reactor components. Evaluations of potential radioactive material release due to hypothetical handling, transportation, and storage accidents. Took the lead on optimizing poison attachment hardware design for irradiated reactor components from conceptual phase through final submittal documentation phase. Authored final design documentation to be included in the licensing application, which included evaluation of structural performance of final design, compliance with functional requirements, and verification of system features that mitigate potential hydrogen generation. Conducted manufacturability and operability reviews for conceptual designs with key stakeholders. Took part in design reviews for several design efforts.
