A Judge Advocate is a U.S. Army officer who is also a lawyer and who provides legal services to commanders and Soldiers at all levels of command. Since 29 July 1775, judge advocates have advised commanders on matters such as administrative proceedings, contract and fiscal concerns, military justice under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, operational and international legal issues, and legal assistance. I instructed Family Law at the Concordia University School of Law in Boise, Idaho.

SMC, PLLC provides professional custody mediation, alternative dispute resolution and legal consulting services to Idaho attorneys, judges and families in order to reduce the impact of custody litigation on Idaho families and children.In 2009, I was approved by the Idaho Supreme Court as a custody mediator in accordance with Rule 16(j), Idaho Rules of Civil Procedure. Since 2009, I have offered a full range of mediation services to family law clients, both at the request of private attorneys/clients and as a court-appointed mediator.

I was one of three founding partners in the premier family law firm of Huneycutt, Smith & Stokes, PLLC. HS&S was founded on the belief that all families deserve diligent, competent and trustworthy counsel to help guide them through often stressful, uncertain and unpleasant family law cases. HS&S is focused on helping families develop creative solutions that maximize parent time, while minimizing child stress.

While working with Jay Meyers, I developed and managed my own case load in the areas of Family Law (divorce, custody, adoption, termination of parental rights, guardianships/conservatorships, paternity), Criminal Law (infractions, misdemeanors, felonies), Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation, Business Planning, and Commercial Litigation. I was responsible for developing marketing and advertising plans for Meyers Law Office, PLLC. I maintained a Mediation Practice as an Idaho Supreme Court approved custody mediator.Jay and Steve Thomsen hired me fresh out of my clerkship. Jay wasn't really a hands-on kind of mentor, but I would not be the person or the attorney I am today without his quiet, straight-forward guidance. He taught me how to deal with clients, how to be profitable, how to treat judges and members of the bar and how to be involved in the community. He loved to argue, but always in a professional, dignified way. His quiet, cowboy wisdom and strength really resonated with me. He didn't need to be the person with the greatest showmanship to be the most persuasive. He was always supportive of me as an associate, as a Soldier who heard the call of duty and left the firm to answer it, as a young mistake-prone attorney, and as a young father struggling to balance work and life. I'll never forget the lessons he taught me in those early years. I am really going to miss Jay. He really embodied what Benjamin Franklin said on mentorship, "tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I may learn."
