I joined the RNZAF in 1985 as an aircraft mechanic where I moved up through the ranks to Sergeant, with the majority of my experience on the P-3 Orion. In 1995 I remustered to Flight Engineer, flying on the P-3 Orion. During this time, along with a builder, I built my own house. In 2001 I left the RNZAF, completed a carpentry apprenticeship and set up my own building company. We focused on the residential market, building new homes and renovation of older homes. In 2012 I re-enlisted in the RNZAF as a Flight Engineer, spending the first year in base operations, then back to 5 Squadron, flying the P-3 Orion. In 2017 I commissioned and became the Flight Engineer Leader, remaining in this role until the P-3 Orion’s withdrawal from service in 2023. My building company is still running albeit in a much reduced capacity and have just completed my own subdivision, where we plan to build our new house on one of the lots(designed and drawn up myself). I also have my own truck, which I rebuilt myself, see Kenworth Steve on YouTube, 5 and 20 ton excavators along with a tractor.With my flying career at an end, over 6000 P-3 Orion flying hours, I’m casually looking for a new challenge.I am proud to have lead the Flight Engineer section through the last few difficult years of operations, with reducing numbers of personnel we maintained our high standards right to end. I am a strong leader who is able to effectively communicate up and down the command chain. I have very good analytical skills, able to fault find complex systems and come up with the root cause and a solution, conveying sometimes complex information in layman’s terms so everyone understands. I am always up for a challenge and believe there are untold opportunities out there where I can put my skills to good use.
