I am widely experienced in planning and regeneration and have worked in senior positions in local authorities across the country, including North London. I have managed and motivated multi-disciplinary teams in local authorities, addressing complex urban and rural development issues. I have managed teams working on planning strategy and policy, conservation and design, development management, transport planning, sustainable development, building control, and related services.Current planning and development projects: mainly working for a Herts Council on the negotiation and delivery of a 2,750 home urban extension, including social infrastructure; and assisting a developer applying for small sites in London. Recent projects: negotiating a 5ha town centre regeneration site; advising a Council on their own town centre redevelopment and working with consultants on a town centre planning framework, including traffic modelling. I am a Past President of the Planning Officers Society and I am their spokesperson on neighbourhood planning. Through POS Enterprises we have recently developed a one day workshop on neighbourhood planning, which is bespoke to the needs of local planning authorities and which has launched successfully. I undertake reviews of plans to ensure they meet the Basic Conditions and give support to neighbourhood plan teams embarking on the process of neighbourhood planning, including engagement with residents, businesses and land owners. I was an Assistant Director in the Regeneration, Leisure & Culture Dept, and my Division was responsible for strategic planning, neighbourhood regeneration, heritage and urban design.

My presidential year coincided with consultation on the Coalition Government's Localism Bill - interesting times, with a mix of very good and very bad impacts on planning for growth. POS members are engaged in town planning in local authorities and other public sector organisations. About 80% of local authorities are members. We support the membership by providing advice and training (the latter through our trading arm, POS Enterprises), and we represent their views in response to Government consultation. We have excellent Regional and Topic Convenors who work on policy issues with interested members, and we have practical working relations with a number of other professional bodies.
