I joined PITO in 1996 as Chief Engineer for the project to procure the development & deployment of the (£100M) National Fingerprint database [NAFIS] for the UK Police Service.

Systems Design Authority in the air traffic management division. Managing a team of analysts and generating specifications, management plans, schedules, resource plans, estimates and risk analysis for air traffic control centre sub-systems and software utilising a mixture of commercial open systems technologies and bespoke design for several countries including a joint venture with Thomson CSF for the Eurocontrol control centre at Maastricht.

Thorn EMI 1991 - 1993Mission systems engineering manager for the upgrade of the RAFs navigation trainer fleet. Before this, systems design authority for various Naval and Air Force projects and proposals for radar and electronic warfare systems with embedded data processing. All these projects involved the management of teams of systems engineers, system modelling, specialist engineers, analysis, specification, ISO9000 quality, management and planning.

MEL (Phillips) 1987 - 1991Technical Manager for the electronic and software development laboratory of the Radar Systems Division. I was responsible for manpower planning, recruitment, assessment and development of staff and providing a technical 'centre of excellence’. Technical design authority in a number of radar and airborne system bids, leading the technical proposal that won the competition to update the RAF navigation trainer fleet.

GEC Avionics 1978 - 1987Senior group leader of the development team leading the design, development, CDS and PDS of an airborne computer complex and operator consoles.I joined GEC as graduate development engineer and initially designed the hardware and software for various embedded airborne units. I then progressed through a succession of expanding responsibilities as section leader (1979), senior section leader (1980), and group leader (1982) to become a senior group leader in 1985.
