Ensuring the technical and loading standards laid down in the vehicle maintenance and overhaul instructions are carried out by audit. Review, altering and ownership of the maintenance standard for current and new build wagons. Issuing new loading standards, maintenance improvements and wagon modifications for new and existing traffic flows and wagon types. Compilation and issue of technical bulletins, special checks, modifications and maintenance alterations through analysis of cripple trends and risk assessment. Compiling overhaul programmes for wagon fleets both currently and future requirements. Analysing wheelchex and HABD data to identify trends and defects. Investigation of in traffic incidents to implement modification, change or establish failings with recommendations for improvement. As part of the Safety and Compliance team, carry out safety inspections and unobtrusive monitoring to ensure maintenance and safety standards are maintained. Auditing sites to ensure compliance with DBS TOPS location maintenance requirements. Liaison with Network Rail RVE’s and PWRA on technical issues.

Responsible for repair and maintenance of mainline diesel electric locomotives to Level 5 standards involving heavy stripdown and rebuilds to engine and ancillary machines and systems to timescale and material budgets. Also, Level 5 repairs to Royal Mail Travelling Post Office Rolling Stock involving complete body repairs and repaints also internal stripouts and repairs/rebuilds with floor renewals. Bogie overhauls to include complete stripdown, blasting, spraying, rebushing and rebuilding of Royal Mail Rolling stock and Class 37 locomotive bogies. Responsible for a team of skilled artisans operating a Ground Wheel Lathe for reprofiling of wheelsets and also bearing examinations and renewals on wagon wheels. At Margam TMD, team leader of servicing and repair of mainline locomotives. Leading/Supervising a team of people to ensure above tasks are undertaken. Monitoring leave, sickness, training and welfare needs. Ensuring safety is observed through safety tours and hazard monitoring. Conducting disciplinary investigations and interviews and actioning as necessary. Writing risk assessments and running a calibration of instruments system to comply with ISO9002. Ensuring maintenance quality is met by auditing work to vehicle standards. Experience also included temporary assignment as Area Engineer South Wales responsible for all aspects of the engineering function in my area. I held this post from August 2001 until January 2002 when the post was filled. I also covered the Area Engineer on an occasional relief basis where shift rosters permitted.

Ensuring reliability and availability of a fleet of mainline diesel locomotives (primarily but not exclusively new build Class 60 locomotives) were maintained through auditing of maintenance exams and main works overhauls, fault finding and problem solving of various faults that arise on locomotives on areas such as pneumatic braking systems, electrical power control and engine related faults. Also, in traffic riding to identify and rectify faults before leading to in service failures.

Ensuring locomotive maintenance is carried out to timescales. Also planning repairs to locomotives and prioritising work and manpower to achieve and maintain reliability and availability of a fleet of mainline diesel locomotives. Ensuring material was ordered for said repairs. Leading and supervising shifts of artisans monitoring training needs, sickness monitoring and all welfare requirements and also maintaining discipline.

Responsible for repair and maintenance of mainline diesel electric locomotives from basic servicing to repairs to engines, braking systems and minor electrical maintenance and repairs.
