I've been working in the Department of Earth Sciences as systems administrator/IT manager since 1992, initially supporting only the research computing side maintaining and installing the UNIX systems but gradually encompassing all aspects of multi-platform integrated network systems, including e-mail, web, Windows/Mac, etc.I've gained skills not only in hardware and software installation, procurement and management but also hardware maintenance right down to fixing machines by diagnosis and replacement of parts using a soldering iron. Truly full stack skills.At the Camborne School of Mines Geopthermal Energy Project I set up the JANET connectivity and built the initial e-mail system using UK Sendmail configuration. Subsequently I designed and built the Exim based e-mail system for Earth Sciences before this was migrated to the central University's Outlook 365 service.With regards to the research computing support, I've used my programming skills to assist faculty, staff and students with their programming problems and used my deep knowledge to help P.I.s to design and procure their equipment etc.
