About Stephen Weigel
Stephen Weigel is a composer and performer of Indianapolis, IN, with a Master’s in Music Composition and Bachelor’s of Music Media Production at Ball State University. His past teachers include Jody Nagel, Michael Pounds, Derek Johnson, Amelia Kaplan, Daniel Swilley, Eleanor Trawick, and Keith Kothman. Stephen’s contributions have been featured at UnTwelve, SPLICE, SEAMUS, Electronic Music Midwest, Charlotte New Music Festival, Electroacoustic Barn Dance, Classical Connect, Edition Zalzal, MU Global, Thirsty Ear, Microtonal Adventures Festival, Pärnu Nüüdismuusika Päevade (Estonia), and Hindemith & Copland International Festival. His music is generally melodic, intelligible, and purpose-driven, though conceptual premises vary wildly - compositional goals often include finding new-sounding chord progressions and melodies, evoking unfamiliar or diverse emotions, poking fun at social ideas, or making sense of uncharted territory. Although his primary instrument is piano, he specializes in performing xenharmonic tunings as a multi-instrumentalist, which is accomplished using DIY keyboard interfaces, electronics, guitars, the voice, and much more. In graduate school, he wrote about all-scalar-set theory, which is the mathematical link between Forte’s post-tonal set theory and Wilson’s Moment of Symmetry theories. Other endeavors include the microtonal podcast featuring Sevish (Now and Xen), keyboard arrangements of Easley Blackwood’s microtonal etudes, transcriptions of microtonal music in a wide variety of equal temperaments, and extensive experience in piano accompaniment and teaching/arrangement.
Listed skills include Music Theory, Composition, Entertainment, Sound, and 8 others.

Freelance Composer
If you request a composition from me, I will write it for you.I compose for a lot of different artistic mediums. I have a group of personal compositions that I will be developing shortly, and I have also composed for many collaborative projects. These projects include: -My high school's fight song (Covenant Christian)-Various movies; Through the Eyehole, Glass Man, Level Three, Toasting the Future-Project Hawkthorne, an online video game created by redditors-A musical about a bunch of bros (Locker Room)-Co-composed a Catholic Mass with Caleb Schultz, a friend who works for the churchI prefer to use choral music or piano when I compose due to personal taste, but am very comfortable writing in just about any style. Details about each project are below.I've also directed a French opera (Werther), and have recorded a number of projects for others.
Recording Engineer
At CRS, I record various performers in Sursa Hall, and occasionally in Choral Hall and/or Pruis Hall. This is accomplished almost always through the use of hanging mikes, flanks, and sometimes balcony mikes. At CRS, we try and get an accurate capture of the sound in Sursa, and we leave ourselves out of the mixing process as much as we can. (Essentially when we adjust levels of these microphones, we are looking for clipping and adjusting stereo imaging and phase.) After concerts are recorded, it is also my job to edit the recording so that tracks are sent to the MMP department as digital files and as a CD.
Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer
With IPR, I work with a show called 'The Scene' that records local bands from Indianapolis and plays their live performances on the radio. The Scene also broadcasts in-studio performances from bands that come to play at Ball State. My responsibilities are primarily mixing, as I have mixed for a few of the episodes already. I also sometimes go out with other employees to record the local bands at specific venues. When we do that, our job is to set up our rig to capture the performance either straight from the stage (using a splitter box to send it to the sound guy as well), or from the board itself. The recording is fairly straightforward, but the mixing is more difficult.
Piano Accompanist
I accompany many vocalists and instrumental players on piano for performances, contests, or jury performances as Ball State. At Ball State, I accompany primarily for the clarinet players, but I have also played for trombonists and a few French horn players. I usually play for between 4 - 10 clients at a time, depending on how close jury performances are. I also accompany for a Festival in Indianapolis annually, which I play for in March. During the Festival (which normally takes place in Avon), I play for about 4-7 vocalists from elementary to middle school, and they have performances that correspond to different kinds of songs. I also accompany two churches. At Ball State, I play piano and direct at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Muncie, usually for four masses a weekend. In Indianapolis, I play at Bethel United Methodist Church some Sundays when I am in town. I also play for Bethel's annual Fish Fry, and for some of the funerals at St. Mary's. In addition, I have played for two weddings and other outdoor events in Avon (fish fry events).
Summer Camp Counselor
I worked at the Y during the 2013 summer. I chose the job because it really helped me understand how to work with kids in a responsible environment. This job has been good experience for someone in music (as I may end up teaching and would then be dealing with kids). My duties were: taking care of the kids during playtime and activities, entertaining them, and making sure the clubhouse was maintained properly.
Gate Supervisor
I originally worked at the IMS as a gate attendant, but became promoted to supervisor after the second summer of working there. As a supervisor, I make sure the attendants at the gates know what they are supposed to do to keep the lines moving. I also answer special questions, call in handicapped carts, and keep an eye on the ticket salesmen at the gates. This job was good for testing my endurance and ability to work with race fans. The hours there can be quite long (usually 12 hour days).
