Stephen Wilkinson is Distinguished Professor of Bioethics and was Associate Dean for Research for FASS (the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) at Lancaster University from 2018 to 2024.He is Principal Investigator for the Wellcome-funded Future of Human Reproduction project: https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/futureofhumanreproduction/He was the holder of a Wellcome Senior Investigator Award (jointly with Professor Rosamund Scott of King’s College London) on Reproductive Donation from 2013 to 2021.He studied Philosophy at Lancaster as an undergraduate before undertaking postgraduate study at the University of Sussex. After obtaining his doctorate, he held short-term posts at Southampton and Sussex before a longer-term move to Keele University. He returned to Lancaster as a professor in 2013.Stephen Wilkinson's most recent research is on reproductive ethics and the regulation of reproductive technologies, especially the ethics of selective reproduction (practices that involve choosing between different possible future people). A book on this topic (Choosing Tomorrow’s Children, Oxford University Press) was published in 2010. A previous phase of work focused on the commercial exploitation of the human body and culminated in his first book, Bodies for Sale (Routledge, 2003).He has also written on various other ethics topics including: biomedical research, conjoined twins, futility, mental illness, passive euthanasia, resource allocation, and uterus transplants.
