I'm an elementary school principal in Marathon, Ontario - at Margaret Twomey Public School. Prior to this position I was principal of Marathon High School, also in the same community. I am interested in building meaningful relationships within the school and creating a sense of belonging for staff, students, and the school community. My current interests include the science of childhood growth and brain development and how this impacts self-regulation in a school setting. I am also interested in learning with my staff and sharing practices, resources, and pedagogy to ensure we meet the needs of all students. I believe in mentorship, challenging conversations, and leading with a balance of head and heart. I am a life-long learner, (my repertoire of random facts, Jeopardy clues, and Wikipedia black holes all serve to prove this!) and I'm passionate about public education.I have 19 years of experience working in education, including 13 years of teaching at the secondary level. From 2005-2018 I worked in Geraldton, Ontario, where I taught high school English at Geraldton Composite High School. In these roles I have developed meaningful partnerships to support students. I've built positive relationships between school and community, worked in the spirit of truth and reconciliation, including formal agreements between schools and First Nation communities. I value relationships and believe in humanizing our roles, supporting one another when it really matters, providing clear goals and expectations, but room for questions and support. Accountability, effort, and positive attitudes are important to me, as is the belief that we are all capable of doing and celebrating great things. I bring pride, respect, and energy to the schools I lead. In addition to leading schools with professional knowledge, compassionate thinking, and with a goal to improve student outcomes through the work of our team I have a sound knowledge of the instructional and operational needs of schools from K-12. I understand good governance, strategic planning, and relationships. I have developed and delivered workshops on strategic communication, stakeholder engagement, instructional strategies, mental health and well-being, and similar areas of focus within the education sector.
