My dissertation, which examines determinants of successful large-scale nonviolent resistance using cross-national event data and qualitative case studies of anti-Apartheid efforts in South Africa and the American Civil Rights Movement.As a graduate student, I have published articles in "Political Science Research Methods," the official journal of the European Political Science Association, and "Foreign Affairs," a leading general audience periodical covering international affairs since 1922. Links to these publications are copied below.I have also provided teaching assistance and instruction for over 60 students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and international relations. My responsibilities in this capacity included lecturing, drafting problem sets, and grading assignments.My qualifying exams are in international relations and quantitative methods.

As a member of the Center for Preventive Action, I prepared analyses and policy recommendations pertaining to plausible short- and medium-term crisis contingencies in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa at the request of senior intelligence and diplomatic officials. Examples of the reports these analyses generated are shown below.As a research associate in the Africa Studies Department, I co-authored an article outlining some of the adverse effects of the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) for U.S. foreign policy in Africa.
