About Stephen Workman

Highly motivated marketing graduate from Indiana University in the School of Public Health with proven leadership, organization, and communication skills. Throughout my work as an intern at AARP, a head dive coach and an assistant dive coach I have learned what it takes to set goals and then strive to meet them. As a member (diver and coach) of the premier summer dive program in Northern Virginia for a decade, I experienced that rare sensation of having the extreme confidence in yourself to accomplish the goals I set out for myself and for the team. I also learned what it means to fail and to bounce back from failure to achieve ultimate success. When I am not working or focusing on my studies, I enjoy spending time with friends and exercising because I am a firm believer in the long-lasting positive effects of friends and being in good physical condition.

Healthy Living Intern In Public Policy Institute

Aarp

Washington D.C. Metro Area

As the Intern for AARP's Healthy Living Initiative in the AARP Public Policy Institute, I prepared materials and provided innovative ideas to help plan and develop programs to more effectively reach a growing audience with the information, tools and resources needed to build and maintain a healthier lifestyle. I wrote and edited business assessments, marketing plans, and external documents, as well as reports summarizing and synthesizing market, financial and segmentation research pertaining to healthy lifestyles. I assisted managers working on the Fit and Fun Challenge, which was AARP's 8 week healthy initiative to challenge people to buddy up and walk 30 minutes a day. I also collaborated with individuals across the enterprise to integrate healthy living principles as a means of helping AARP accomplish its mission of empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how to live as they age. As a member of AARP’s Healthy Living Team, I improved my marketing and communication skills and gained valuable experience in program planning and development.

Communications Strategic Positioning Intern At Aarp Foundation

Washington D.C. Metro Area

As an intern at AARP Foundation in the office of strategic positioning and external relations, I gained real workplace experience, learned the everyday ins and outs of a well-run business, advanced my knowledge and experience in fields that will help me achieve my career goals, and had the opportunity to network with some of the most highly motivated and dedicated people in the D.C. area. My assignments and projects included: • Internal communications—editing and formatting blogs and PowerPoint presentations and working to update and improve AARP Foundation’s Intranet site.• Event planning and preparation—Participating in meal pack preparatory meetings for events in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington D.C. that engaged more than 1,500 AARP members and volunteers packing more than 1,000,000 meals • Sponsorship development and planning—Attending meetings to plan and develop activities in conjunction with the Miami Dolphins and AARP Foundation sponsorship, which is designed to help promote AARP Foundation throughout Hard Rock Stadium.• Communication Planning and Program Development—Attended weekly meetings with the communications team at AARP Foundation, where we would discuss how to improve programs such as BACK TO WORK 50+, AARP Tax Aide, AARP Experience Corps, and others. Our goal was to develop strategies and tactics for getting more people involved in those programs, as well as to get more people to click on these program links on the AARP Foundation website. I learned a lot during my internship at AARP that I can apply as I pursue my major and career in sports marketing and management. Equally important, I gained new insight into how hard I am going to need to work and how much time I am going to have to commit in order to complete my career goals as well as my life goals.

Head Dive Coach

Arlington, Virginia

As the head coach at Dominion Hills dive team, I led and managed three assistant coaches and a team of more than 50 divers between the ages of 6 and 18. I took over a team that was climbing up divisions in the Northern Virginia Swim and Dive League (NVSL) and continued to advance the team. In my one year as head dive coach, I built and maintained strong relationships with the divers, the dive representative (my boss), and most importantly, the divers’ parents. I applied what I had learned from my experience as the assistant dive coach at Truro to help transform the culture of the Dominion Hills team from just a "fun" culture into a “learning and winning” culture, while still having fun. We concluded our season with only one loss, and the NVSL promoted Dominion Hills from Division 5 to Division 4.

Assistant Dive Coach

Truro Homes Association

Annandale, Virginia

I began diving on the Truro dive team in 2006 (at age 9) and continued until 2015 (age 18) as a graduating senior. During my last three years, I was also hired to be an assistant dive coach. The Truro Dive Team was the premier dive program in the Northern Virginia Swim and Dive League (NVSL). We had been Division 1 champions for the past 11 years, and had not lost a dive meet since 2004. This was due to the leadership of our coach, Rob Carvajal, Jr. Rob was not only my coach and friend, he was also my mentor. I learned a lot from Rob about being a leader and what it takes to be successful. He taught me that success does not happen over night. Whether it was the 3-times-a-day practices or the weekend practices, Rob let every member of the team know that our work was going to payoff, and it did. From 2006 to 2015, Truro went 50-0 and won ten straight Division One Championships. When Rob left at the end of 2014, Truro hired another head coach, but I stayed on as an assistant coach (along with three other assistants) to finish my diving career at Truro. We saw it as part of our responsibility to the Truro program and to Rob, to make sure the winning culture of the team did not change despite the face of the team leaving. In 2015, Truro went 5-0 for an 11th consecutive season. And, in 2016, I was hired to be the head coach of Dominion Hills dive team where I strived to put into practice many of the lessons I learned from Rob at Truro.
