The forthcoming RAE will be the seventh in a series of similar exercises. RAE 2026 will continue to assess the research performance of the eight Hong Kong UGC-funded universities in terms of research outputs, impact and environment.

I am a member of the Creative Arts, Performing Arts & Design Panel of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2020 conducted by the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong. This is the sixth in a series of similar exercises. RAE 2020 will assess the research performance of the eight UGC-funded universities in terms of research outputs, impact and environment. My relevant expertise comes from being a sub-panel member for Art and Design for the UK Research Excellence Framework in 2014, and advising and providing training to the Royal College of Art and other universities on preparing for REF 2021.

This includes Design Products, Fashion, Global Innovation Design, Healthcare and Design, Innovation Design Engineering, Service Design, Textiles.I lead the School's research strategy and look after its implementation in terms of supporting and advising staff, seeking external funding, and promoting the research work of the School and the College as a whole.I also undertake my own research on data visualisation, especially of time and history. This currently involves two PhD students, both funded by the AHRC: Sam Cottrell and Olivia Vane. Sam is collaborating with The National Archives, while Olivia is working with Wellcome, the Cooper Hewitt and the V&A. My previous PhD student funded by the EPSRC, Florian Kräutli, is now Research Technology Officer at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

This role involves reviewing funding proposals under the SR&TD (Scientific Research and Technological Development) Project Grant scheme 2020.

The Art and Design Research Institute (ADRI) at Middlesex was created in 2007 and I was asked to lead it in 2009. My task were motivating and assisting my colleagues, securing resources, and developing and implementing strategy.• Encouraging and assisting staff research development, including identifying ways in which practice-based work can be presented for evaluation (RAE / REF), and other strategies for engaging studio practitioners in research. • Developing links across programmes, departments and schools, diversifing sources of income and creating projects that would have otherwise been impossible.• Contributing to training students and staff in research methods and research ethics. • Developing websites for research, and contributing to the development of the University digital repository.• Managing the £300Kpa budget, liaising with the finance department and University research office, ensuring that funds were spent effectively and in line with the agreed strategy.

Teaching Masters degrees in Interactive Media and other subjects; developing new curricula and courses; supervising research students; teaching undergraduate courses; undertaking research.

I ran short courses for people in Further and Higher Education on how to apply the use of computers to design and art. Later with colleagues I founded an MA in Design for Interactive Media, among the earliest in the world.

Starting by teaching a range of general art and design skills, I stumbled across computers - specifically a Research Machines 380Z, which had a better range of colours (256) than almost any computer available at that time. Later I taught myself a lot by using a BBC Micro and began to introduce Art and Design students to computing, initially following in the footsteps of the inspiring Brian Newman, whose own computer was a New Brain.

I escaped into Higher Education from an awful job in the textile industry. To my surprise, I enjoyed it.
