About Stephen Bradford
I’ve always had a passion for adventure and things with wheels, including dirt bikes (riding and racing 10k++ miles in Baja) and mountain bikes (moving to Reno, NV to be near trails around Lake Tahoe). These passions and a love of tinkering led me to earn an MS in Mechanical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. While at UCSB, I designed and patented an automatic washing machine that can intelligently measure and dispense optimal amounts of detergent to ensure that laundry is washed properly and efficiently. Additionally, the machine can automatically reorder them for direct delivery, saving time and energy (see my Patents section for more info).Seeking a way to commercialize this IP led me to Boombang, an innovation consultancy specializing in the intersection of Technology + Business + Design. It was a natural fit and I spent 12+ years working on a wide variety of interesting and challenging technical development programs for a wide range of clients, from startups to multinational corporations (see my Featured and Experience sections for more info).I pivoted back to my love for things with wheels, joining Cruise to help develop driverless robotaxis. This was a wild ride with significant highs (acting as the Lead Systems Engineer for the High Speed Program, culminating with the global deployment of high speed capabilities across multiple markets) and unfortunate lows (pausing our commercial operations). It will be interesting to see how this technology matures and eventually gets deployed into Personal Autonomous Vehicles (PAVs).During my career, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in a variety of industries (see my Featured section for more info), leading my to some key insights that have helped me to successfully lead and manage technical development programs with cross-functional teams, including:• When things go right, give the credit to your team• When things don’t go right, take the credit as the manager• The key role of a manager is to help build the right dynamics and procure the right resources to facilitate team success• Clear expectations (goals, plans, and accountability) and clear communication (with documentation) are key to achieving technical and operational program objectives• You can be right and still be wrong, especially when it comes to clients• Most of all, work to maintain the sense of purpose, novelty, and exploration to keep your team engaged and passionateI look forward to continuing on this exciting path of helping to develop technology that will have a positive impact in the future.
Listed skills include Product Development, Marketing, Product Design, Project Management, and 7 others.

Senior Manager, Av Dev Systems Engineering
CurrentI was promoted to lead a very talented team defining the engineering requirements of new vehicle platforms and new step-function capabilities for Cruise to drive development from 0 to 1. As Systems Engineers (SEs), our mission is to lead the technical definition and V&V (Verification & Validation) of new Cruise products and services in order to meet enterprise stakeholder needs, including Product, Safety, Legal / Regulatory, Security, Privacy, Finance, Business Units, and Comm Ops. Our scope covers the vehicle (AV), Cruise HW, onboard SW, backend services, front end services, commercial operations, and interfaces with the Host Vehicle (GM).In Q4 2024, our team led a cross functional effort to publish a comprehensive set of 1,500+ Tier 2 (e.g. vehicle level) requirements for the L4 Gen7 robotaxi platform. These are critical to inform decomposition and development of lower levels (i.e. system, sub-system, component). Our team is also responsible for defining detailed test cases to verify that the lower level integration has been completed appropriately and validate the performance of the end product.
Staff Systems Engineer, Av Platforms
Cruise AVs launched driverless operations at 25 mph in SF in 2022. Expanding commercial ops to new markets required developing and validating higher speed (35-45 mph) driverless capabilities. The High Speed Program was critical for scaling by improving routability, reachability, and overall speed. As the Lead Enterprise SE, I worked with enterprise stakeholders to define and deliver against Product Reqs (PRD), V&V, and an aggressive development schedule. This highly XFN program required significant efforts to diligently re-evaluate virtually every aspect of our ecosystem to ensure safe and robust ops, improving underlying tools and processes for all speeds. I was able to demonstrate my technical expertise and ability to solve highly complex problems to deliver substantial impact. Some key aspects of the program that I led included:• Prioritized capability / maneuver enablement to optimize business impact• Improved config management to ensure that only the maneuvers, capabilities, and conditions validated at high speed were enabled• Sourced, prioritized, and triaged hazards to proactively mitigate high speed risks• Drove V&V strategy and execution to enable global high speed (35 mph) ops (24/7 in all markets), resulting in +17.5% routable miles
Director Of Product Development
As the technical lead and program manager on a wide variety of complex product development programs from concept to commercialization, I managed stakeholders and resources (internal and external) to build consensus and efficiently deliver on program and business objectives. Clients and goals varied, but phased deliverables often included strategy, ideation, design development, engineering, prototyping, V&V, sourcing, production oversight, and QA/QC. Additionally, many programs involved developing business strategies, commercialization plans, pro forma financials, investor presentations, brand architecture and design, and marketing strategies.Clients included large international corporations like MLB, Harman (JBL, AKG, Harman Kardon), lululemon, Under Armour, Nike, Adidas, New Era Cap, LG, Skullcandy, Fellowes, Simmons, and Trojan as well as entrepreneurial ventures like InnoVero Global, Tribogenics, Zygo, Reeplayer, Soundfreaq, and many more.Key responsibilities include:• Work with stakeholders to define success via clear scopes, PRDs, V&V plans, and phased schedules with dependencies to facilitate tracking and reporting• Plan, manage, and execute programs to clear budgets and timelines to achieve technical and business objectives• Devise contingency plans for potential issues to proactively manage expectations and scope changes• Quickly align with various clients, including reporting structures and corporate politics• Build, develop, and grow a network of XFN client, vendor, and partner relationships to integrate HW, SW, materials, and operations into finished products• Identify, engage, and supervise resources, balancing capabilities and capacity to optimize efficiency and results• Utilize strong communication skills to actively manage the various viewpoints and needs of end users, customers, clients, engineers, designers, and other key stakeholders to ensure success• Develop and refine best practices to continually improve execution and performance
Travel
Extensive journey through 30+ countries around the world that provided time for personal reflection and growth while exploring diverse cultures.Focused on discovering a variety of ways to improve health, happiness, and purpose while strengthening adaptability, creativity, empathy, and conscientiousness. This included a Vipassana meditation retreat in Sri Lanka (absolutely no speaking or eye contact for 10 days), extended yoga studies in the Indian Himalayas, learning about different religions (including Buddhism and Hinduism), and getting a first hand view of a long list of ancient historical sites.
Director Of Customer Success
After years of success working on multiple audio brands, Boombang assembled a team of strategists, marketers, audio engineers, and product designers to birth a new consumer audio company called Soundfreaq that would have broad appeal at big box retail.Being an entrepreneurial venture, I filled a variety of roles, including supporting the design and development of a collection of BT wireless speakers that became top sellers at Target, experiencing double-digit growth every year, ultimately reaching global distribution and $30 million in revenue. In addition, I implemented, supervised, and maintained a web store that reached $75k in monthly sales within the first year and a web-based customer service system to support the 500+ new customers per day.
Team Manager
Combining my passion for motorsports, adventure, and the outdoors, I coordinated the marketing, financing, sponsorship, and logistics for our SCORE Baja motorcycle race team (as well as racing myself).Preparation, perseverance, improvisation, and the ability to operate with incomplete information and quickly adapt to changing conditions led to an 80% (4/5) finishing rate (average is ~55%) and two Top-10 finishes in the highly competitive Open Pro motorcycle class at the legendary Baja 1000.
Travel
Extended journeys through 16 countries in South America (9 months in 2009) and Central America (2 months in 2012) that provided time for personal reflection and growth while exploring diverse cultures and learning new languages (Portuguese and Spanish)Explored our physical and mental limits (and spectacular scenery) through treks in Patagonia and the Andes, including summiting a 20,000' mountain in Bolivia
Vp Of Sales
