About Stephen C. Johnson

"The old rules don't work so well anymore.""Marketing is dead.""Long live marketing."From Purple Cow, by Seth Godin. I have had the privilege of working with many of the brightest and early disruptive leaders in the media industry. From the launch team of USA Today to key management positions at the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Newspaper Agency (JOA), to CEO of a Strategic Marketing Group for Thomson Newspapers. Many of these experiences were industry game-changing innovations, both in tactics and strategies, including their entrepreneurial design. Each experience has influenced me in different ways and provided valuable life lessons. The larger markets provided the experience of managing large diverse workforces and the importance of using a collaborative approach. As the CEO and publisher of smaller community sized operations, I realized the importance of being involved and supporting the community's economic development efforts. This included supporting the arts and non-profits to promote the community's image and lifestyle, and always serving as a mentor to develop the local workforce. The news media industry has changed dramatically over the past decades, and the launch of USA Today certainly challenged some old media models and thinking. Being cognizant of these changes throughout my career drove me to embrace being a life-long learner. With today's ever-increasing pace of change, you must be able to adapt to industry, demographic or flat world shifts, and develop skills of resiliency to survive and succeed! As a thought leader for the news media industry in the area of circulation marketing, I have lectured throughout North America, served as a key discussion leader at the American Press Institute, was a columnist for the International News Media Association magazine, and a frequent lecturer for marketing & leadership programs at the University of Southern California and the Niemen Foundation at Harvard University.

Listed skills include Publishing, Newspapers, Marketing, Magazines, and 42 others.

the419 reported stories and features that would not have been told or become a three minute sound burst on electronic media, seldom would find room in the local newspaper. It is often proven that its media becomes the lens of a community to people not living or working there. the419 focused on offering a different and more positive view of community events, activities with focus on its citizens and their accomplishments which other local media chose not cover. The community trusted that the419 would tell stories as it’s masthead stated it was ‘locally owned, locally operated and community focused’.the419 achieved +30,000 loyal readers in less then two years. the419 really became the true lens of what was positive about the community its accomplishments and its people. While achieving a very loyal readership audience, which, continued to grow it, choosing to transform the model from a print to a digital product still allowing readers to print on demand. While the419 quickly achieved a high readership market share, the traditional baby boomer managers were reticent to understand the new media measurements of impressions and the trend to mobile and tablet. Few understood the digital age was not in the future but now in the present. We chose to suspend publication but when asked about the experience I could easily respond: “We had a great team full of passion and talent, committed to a high level of business ethics and editorial excellence. And believed in Simon Sinek's book ‘Start with Why” -- its not what you do its why you do it.
