I provide advice and training to universities and researchers to help them win research funding and boost the impact of their research.Impact is the contribution of research in the real world. Universities are under more pressure than ever from funders to show their impact. I work with academics to plan, deliver, capture and report on impact, especially with regard to impact plans in research proposals and impact case studies for REF.Competition for funding to fuel research is fierce. I offer expertise on Research Councils and other UK funders to boost grant success, from early career to strategic programmes. I have helped academics win tens of millions of pounds of research funding.I work with universities on a number of levels. For individual academics I offer one-to-one support (e.g. reviewing/developing funding bids and impact case studies, funder interview preparation); for groups of academics I offer training and facilitation (e.g. funding and impact skills/awareness, mock funder panels); and for departments/institutions I design and deliver schemes and strategies to improve institutional performance. My expertise is based on 15 years in the university sector covering research, funding development and impact management. My background includes a PhD and postdoctoral research in chemistry and positions as an EPSRC portfolio manager, university funding development manager and university impact manager. I specialise in funding (Research Councils and other UK funders) and impact development across all disciplines. For more information please see my website www.stephenckemp.co.uk.

Impact Framework ManagerUniversity Of Southampton Jan 2016 - Jan 2018UkAs central impact lead at the University of Southampton, I worked with academics, professional services and leadership to embed impact across the university. My overarching objective was to develop impact culture, awareness and activity in support of the university's mission to change the world for the better. I also coordinated REF impact preparations across the university which included setting up an institutional review, developing and sharing best practice and reviewing impact case studies. -
Senior Research Support OfficerUniversity Of Southampton Apr 2012 - Dec 2015I moved to the University of Southampton in 2012 where I advised and trained academics seeking research funding, from early career fellowships to major strategic grants, including how to incorporate impact into research proposals. I mainly worked with academics in engineering and physical, environmental and biological sciences, providing advice and support all stages of funding development from planning to panel (including interviews), reviewing proposals, writing institutional bids and providing training (both to academics and to other funding development staff). -
Energy Portfolio ManagerEpsrc Apr 2011 - Apr 2012UkMy work as a Portfolio Manager at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) involved running peer review processes, designing funding schemes and working with academics to understand needs, opportunities and provide training and guidance. I started at EPSRC in 2009, just as the UK Research Councils introduced Impact Plans (later Pathways to Impact) as a requirement in research proposals. Consequently much of my work was about explaining impact and how to build it into research proposals. My work at EPSRC also involved broad stakeholder engagement, from developing a nuclear energy technology roadmap with academia, industry and government to exploring the impacts of robotics and AI research with experts from computer science, law and philosophy. -
