Worked onsite at GE Energy as a contractor supporting the Tools Center of Excellence by creating or editing CAD models using Unigraphics NX6. After a CAD model was completed I meshed the CAD model using NX6’s internal mesher, ICEM, ANSYS Workbench, or Hypermesh. Meshes consists of pure hex, hybrid, or teterhedral’s with prism layering based on the customers preferred method. Meshes were checked for errors and quality and then translated to the appropriate solver. Each mesh was then checked in the solver it was meant for to ensure there was no error in the format translation.

- Led the CFD and heat transfer analysis of the GEnx TAPS and eTAPS combustor from Conceptual Design Review through Detailed Design Review. - Developed the CFD fuel spray method used with the TAPS combustor that helped improve thermocouple and hot streak matching.- Verified CFD and heat transfer methodology by matching thermocouple data to analytical data from various engine tests.- Analysis helped reduced combustor aero and mechanical issues and manufacturing costs.- Helped develop a transient conjugate heat transfer method which reduces analysis time.- Created a detailed spreadsheet to apply CFD boundary conditions. This created cost reductions since cases could be setup quickly and turnaround time decreased.- Provided successful analysis that the GEnx combustor case burn-through at high pressure ratios would not require a 50 lb heat shield on the engine strut creating $50K/plane cost savings for the program.- Utilized ICEM and GAMBIT to mesh complex combustor designs- Compiled CFD and heat transfer results for GE technical reviews, design record books, and technical papers.- Assisted in material review board (MRB) sessions where errors in manufacturing were checked analytically to ensure there was no need for rework of parts and the life of the part was unaffected.- Led the TF34-100A fuel nozzle and swirler experimentation setup conducted at the University of Cincinnati. Created the technical project summary (TPS) that included what methods of measurement to be used and locations of measurement. - Led the heat transfer for the GEnx combustor cost reduction. This included making changes to the heat transfer mesh and reapplying boundary conditions.- Conducted LES on different GEnx Fuel nozzle geometries to investigate the combustor acoustics at take-off conditions.- Investigated numerically the spray characteristics for the GEnx combustor with supercritical fuel properties at take-off conditions.

Being able to replicate these field issues, design changes could then be made and re-run analytically to see the impact.- Assisted in the CFD analysis of the F414 combustor to replicate field thermal distress issues. Being able to replicate the field issue, we were able to make design changes and CFD was then re-run to ensure that thermal distress would be eliminated.
