About Stephen De Villiers
Originally from South Africa, Stephen is a filmmaker and creative director known for his work in drama, documentaries, and commercials. An alumnus of the directing course at the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS), in total, he has directed more than 15 narrative films and is privileged to have worked with some of South Africa and Australia’s top actors. His past festival highlights include screening as part of the Short Film Metrage at Cannes, while one of his shorts, Super Sounds has screened at over 60 top film festivals, including Giffoni (Italy), Flickerfest (Sydney), Byron Bay and the San Francisco International Film Festival. He is the founder and managing director of Watchpost, a full-service content agency, production company and post-production company, and its sister company Arterial Films, a dedicated long form media entertainment company. In his capacity as a commercial director, his work has taken him to all corners of the globe, from Japan to San Franciso, London to Cape Town and many places in between.In 2021 he was one an episode director on the Netflix-commissioned TV Series, Gymnastics Academy, and in 2022 his documentary The Rover of Tobruk was acquired by Fox Sports (USA) and BT Sports (UK). His feature documentary, The Burnt Half tells the inspiring yet harrowing story of the communities on Kangaroo Island affected fateful Black Summer bushfires, and was acquired by SBS for broadcast in 2024, with X4 handling global sales.

Founded by Stephen de Villiers in 2014 as the production vehicle behind his latest short film, Super Sounds, D2V Entertainment was officially incorporated in 2015 and is currently developing a slate of short and feature films. I spent two and a half years directing for KOJO, an award winning digital creative house that specialises in telling stories, and has done so in 22 countries over the last 20 years.I directed commercial, corporate, online and branded content, working on a number of high profile accounts and projects that saw me directing across the USA, Asia and Europe.Highlights Include:Thomas Food International - Agency: Hybrid, Prod: Matt Byrne, DOP: Aaron Gully. 1St Ad/2Nd Unit Director - The Joe Manifesto
1st AD/2nd Unit Director on an Indie Feature shot in Melbourne in late 2008. Directed by Gregory Pakis, Produced by Julian Costanzo. This was an intense 6 week location shoot, with a large ensemble cast. This was a slightly more delicate task, in that the Director was also the lead actor, and as such my duties as a 1st AD were naturally increased.

I wrote, produced and directed this ambitious, award winning short film. Based on the journal of Deneys Reitz, Commando is a period piece action drama, set during the Anglo-Boer War. Commando won Best Cinematography at the M-Net EDiT Student Awards, and has screened in competition at a number of prestigious international festivals.
