Following promotion I am now a senior in-house legal adviser in the Solicitors Regulation Authority's General Counsel and Case Direction Directorate. I provide legal advice to functions across the SRA on various matters, including:Providing advice on the legal obligations and regulatory powers available to the organisation, including rules drafting, statutory interpretation, vires and other public law issues.Advice on regulatory reform, including the SRA’s fining powers, insurance arrangements, SQE and interpretation of the Standards and Regulations. This has also included advice on external proposals for reform of legal services regulation more widely. Supporting case direction work through, for example, reviewing and providing advice on regulatory and disciplinary cases, including those involving AML issues. Taking on a leading role on major projects including (i) work to establish the SRA as a separate legal entity, which involved establishment and transfer of regulatory functions to the new entity, drafting of board papers, dealing with ad hoc queries connected to the project, and extensive stakeholder management including working constructively with operational leads across the business, execs, external lawyers and the Law Society; and (ii) the SRA's project and consultation on the future of the Solicitors Indemnity Fund. Providing solutions to legal problems in order to meet the SRA’s objectives.Ad hoc legal issues which may arise including in respect of commercial contracts and intellectual property rights.Representing the SRA at external events, including presentations to in-house lawyers on the Standards and Regulations.I am also responsible for the line management of two legal advisers in the team, and manage our teams external legal fees budget.
