These investigations often involved working directly with customer setups, and live debugging in screen-sharing sessions to isolate to the simplest reproducible test case. Once defects were fixed, patches had to be compiled and regression-suite tested against several product versions prior to release to customers. At the time, our small sustaining engineering/QA team was also the Security Response Team - responsible for security defect investigation, patch creation, testing/validation as well as security bulletin authoring.Long before HeartBleed, my best and most satisfying work was corralling 6 competitors as part of a joint security release - when a common open source parser hack affected every vendor's product. The white hat researcher who discovered the hack brought the findings to our team first because of our teams' openness and reputation for working cooperatively with vendors reporting security holes. The joint release was a success. -
