Steve Garrett is a Cardiff-based local food activist and award-winning social entrepreneur. He set up the Riverside Farmers’ Market in 1998 and mentors other people who want to set up small businesses. Steve has lived in Cardiff for more than 20 years, and been involved with many community-based cultural activities, including co-ordinating the annual Riverside Festival. He is also a writer and a musician (a.k.a. ‘Stainless Steve) and has published 4 books of poetry - including ‘Bloke-abulary’ aimed at male readers.

As Founding Director of RCMA Social Enterprise Ltd., Steve steered the award-winning Riverside Market through thirteen years of growth to becoming the largest farmers’ market in Wales, and has initiated various spin-off activities such as: setting up four other markets in Cardiff; overseeing RCMA’s education and outreach activities, such as the Riverside Community Garden; co-writing the RCMA Urban Farmers' Market Toolkit; and helping develop the RCMA Market Garden project - a co-operatively owned social enterprise which grows certified organic produce for sale to residents and restaurants and provides training in organic horticulture. Recently Steve set up ‘Get Ffresh!’ – Cardiff’s pop-up local food shopSteve is included in the 2009 Sustain Wales ‘Green List’ of Welsh environmental activists, was winner in 2010 of an Inspire Wales Awards and a finalist in the 2011 and 2012 Leading Wales Awards. Recently he directed the launch of the Cardiff Food Charter and is a founding member of the Cardiff Food Council.Steve has an MSc in Urban Agriculture from Cardiff University, and alongside his work in Wales, he is currently working with women’s organisations in Zimbabwe and Uganda to set up rural food production/marketing cooperatives.Steve writes a regular ‘Go Green’ blog for the Western Mail and is a Community Reporter with BBC Radio Wales, and was a presenter at the 2012 Observer TEDx talks.
