  • Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training)
    Raf Vr(T)
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training) May 2002 - Jan 2010
During my 15 years service in the Air Training Corps I was promoted to various ranks, the most senior being Flying Officer. In my most senior role as a cadet I was responsible for the welfare of the squadron cadets with ages ranging from 13 – 18. After reaching the age restriction for cadets I transferred to the role of a civilian instructor, which entailed teaching the cadets various subjects such as air navigation and principles of flight to prepare them for the exams, which they are required to sit annually. After undertaking a series of commissioning boards and after completing an Initial Officers Course at Royal Air Force College Cranwell, I was appointed to the rank of Pilot Officer with a commission in Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force (Volunteer Reserve). I was promoted to take command of a squadron, with promotion to Flight Lieutenant pending completion of a Senior Officers Course, which gave me the responsibility for the welfare of 30 cadets and 10 squadron staff. My duties included: • Taking responsibility for the cadets and staff on parade nights• Administration of all aspects of squadron activities • Day to day running of squadron • Teaching lecturesAfter a sabbatical to complete my MSc in Project Management other commitments have not allowed me to return to my post, however I have remained within the organisation as a member of the Civilian Welfare Committee.Being a member of the Air Training Corps helped me to become a more confident person and to handle situations more assertively. It also taught me valuable life skills that I feel would enable me to succeed in many areas.
