    The 4K for Cancer was acquired by the Ulman Cancer Fund (UCF) in the fall of 2011. After the acquisition, the UCF was looking to hire a staff to work on the program in conjunction with an Americorp fellow. Luckily for me, the COO at UCF saw enough work ethic in me to give me a shot and hired me as the interim program coordinator. Having just finished the program as a participant a short four months earlier, I was eager to turn all of my great ideas in to reality. It took a great deal of work, but over the next couple of years I was able to greatly affect the outcomes and direction of the program.During my time as program coordinator I developed materials and trainings that increased participant fundraising by 11% in 2012 and 20% in 2013. Through improved marketing and branding efforts, I was able to increase recruitment by 5% in 2012 and 45% in 2013. The success I am most proud to affect however was that I was able to help preserve and enhance a program to help others in the same way it was able to help me.

    I started working at the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) in the summer of 2004. As a lifelong sailor and your typical 16 year old, I had a dream job. While my friend's had summer work in restaurants and inside the mall, I was able to spend my time sailing around Baltimore's beautiful harbor teaching people the joys of sailing. Working at the DSC, I was able to develop as a professional at an early age. I learned the value of communication, team building, leading by example, and work ethic. I was lucky enough to work with some amazing people and programs. During my six summers at the DSC I was lucky enough to serve as the Head Instructor for their Outreach, Sailors Instructor Training (SIT), and Juniors Program. The Outreach program worked with inner city school children, ages 5-8, who were enrolled in summer camp. The SIT program trained inner city high school students how to become sailing instructors to expand their summer job options. The Juniors program was a summer day camp where we would team young people, ages 5-13, everything from the basics of sailing to advanced sail and race theory. I also had the pleasure of instructing adults during the evenings and on weekends. I have instructed students as young as 5 and old as 85. It was through instructing students of such varying ages and with such drastic backgrounds that I learned the value in tailoring communication styles to your specific audience at at time.
