Bristol+Bath Creative R+D is a £6.8 million, AHRC-funded first-of-a-kind collaboration between the West of England’s four universities - UWE Bristol, Bath Spa, the University of Bath and the University of Bristol - and digital creativity centre Watershed. The programme supports the UK and Local Industrial Strategy by accelerating the impact of the region’s creative technology cluster, breaking down the doors, connecting the worlds of university research and creative business to collectively imagine and develop the future of the creative industries.Digital Placemaking aims to enhance and deepen the relationship between people and places. As a Digital Placemaking Fellow, I will be working with a small cohort of Fellows to identify, commission and develop best practice examples of Digital Placemaking. My final report is called “Rebooting the Digital City - Digital Placemaking at the Edge”

The Cabot Institute, the University of Bristol’s first flagship cross-disciplinary research institute, conducts world-leading research on the challenges arising from how we live with, depend on and affect our planet. It is rooted in a recognition of social and environmental challenges but inspired by the spirit of exploration personified by John Cabot (Zuan Caboto) and the City of Bristol.

Bristol Futures was at the forefront of working out what it means to be a creative, smart, green and connected city. As the first Director of Bristol Futures, I built a high profile, award winning and highly motivated council team. Bristol Futures is internationally recognised for its smart cities work and for its focus on creating liveable cities through technology, sustainability and innovation. Our mission was to create fairer, more inclusive cities, which are resilient to shocks and stresses and where all citizens can flourish.

Bristol IS Open is the world's first open, programmable city region, I was the instigator of the project, setting a vision to establish a joint venture company between Bristol City Council and the University of Bristol to manage the unique smart city digital infrastructure deployed via the Gigabit Bristol Progamme. Once the JV company was established, I took a role within the BIO senior Management Team to develop city IOT experiments utilising the network's capabilities. This involves working alongside the CTO, Finance Director and MD. BIO remains a unique city region investment that is helping position Bristol on the international stage.

Bristol succeeded in becoming a runner up in the Government's Digital Challenge - a competition to identify the country's best digital city. Connecting Bristol was the partnership I established and led initially to submit Bristol's bid but subsequently to deliver a visionary digital inclusion programme. In this role, I was also a founder member of the national Digital Challenge Network (the DC10) which linked 10 leading UK digital cities with each other and with Government. Bristol's smart city success grew from this national collaboration. Connecting Bristol is still active at www.connectingbristol.org

I developed Bristol City Council’s strategic approach to public engagement including pioneering work on the use of technology and the Internet to increase democratic decision making.I established and successfully ran the Bristol Citizens’ Panel, produced 50+ citywide research reports, supported the city’s first Citizens’ Jury, piloted new technologies for improved public consultation and democratic engagement, such as e-petitioning and Ask Bristol. I led national projects and programmes within the government’s e-Innovations Programme and the Local e-Democracy National Project and undertook a major research and evaluation programme with The Oxford Internet Institute and The Tele-Democracy Centre and Napier University.For several years, I ran an international on-line moderator's course, delivered via The Hansard Society

Whilst studying for my Masters Degree I established a successful research consultancy and worked with public and voluntary sector organisations to develop user-focussed policy and strategy. Projects included,- review of single homeless strategy for Reading Borough Council- development of family support strategy for West Berkshire- evaluation of effectiveness of community regenerations scheme for Slough Borough Council- review of single homeless service for REAP Resettlement Agency
